"A copy of the so-called 'Downing Street Memo', produced in July 2002 for Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair on the legality of the invasion of Iraq."

I agree. This is a graphic and that is their out. Since Mr. Smith has admitted (if I have his latest story correct) that he made a copy of an original then made a copy of the copy and then destroyed the copy of the original (hello?) then why shouldn't reuters have an image made up for "dramatical purposes"?

In reality the caption is correct....mostly. The "...copy of the so-called 'Downing Street Memo' in 2002..." part is spot-on in as far as this is a copy of a copy of a destroyed copy of an original memo and an anonymously-leaked one to boot. As George Carlin once said, before the snarling metamorphosis, "If you break a crumb in half you don't have two-halves of a crumb, you've got two crumbs, man. Something for nothing."

I still have seen no proof that this is an "official original" or whether this a "forged original" on "official paper" or yada yada yada.

The Doctor has done good in as far as Reuters is again snagged in an act of manipulation and, once again and for the umpteenth time, highlights what side they are on.

Mapes and freelance journalist Michael Smith (who worked on the piece with Mapes) had different recollections of how Burkett came into custody of the documents. Smith told the panel that Burkett “received them anonymously in the mail”, while Mapes said Burkett identified a warrant officer named George Conn (which Burkett would later admit was a lie).

Is this the same Michael Smith???

Dollars to donuts the vast majority of the Kool-Aid Set have no clue that Downing Street contains the official residence of the British Prime Minister.

As a caveat to my last post, I really wouldn't be surprised if this is a classic slip-and-slide operation by Rove/others to create a blood-in-the-water effect (calls for impeachment, speeches, Durbin, Rangel etc.) just before pulling the ultimate Lucy and all the Charlie Browns (and Brownettes) on the left let out a collective "Aaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!"

I am guessing they are not the same guy....but i don't really know!

From earlier in this thread......

***************************************************

On July 23, Michael Smith, a freelance journalist in Texas who was working on the story along with Mapes, sent her an email that began: "I am close to something that the Bushies are worried about...

******************************************************

Michael Smith is the Defence Correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. He was born in 1952 and served with the British Army for 15 years, mainly with the Intelligence Corps in much the same role as that carried out by most of those who worked at Bletchley Park 30 years earlier. He left the army in 1982 and worked for the BBC before joining the Daily Telegraph in 1990. He has since reported on the 1991 Gulf War, and on successive conflicts in the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq. He is the author of a number of books on espionage including the number one bestseller Station X: The Codebreakers of Bletchley Park; The Emperor's Codes; and Foley: The Spy Who Saved 10,000 Jews, which led to the official Israeli recognition of the former MI6 officer Frank Foley as Righteous Among Nations, the same award given to Raoul Wallenberg and Oskar Schindler. His latest book The Spying Game: The Secret History of British Intelligence was published in April 2003.

He was asking you to call in to talk about the Ground Zero Memorial protest tomorrow.

First time I've ever heard a talk show host ask a specific listener to call.....

I did a quick search and came up with this internet forum link hosted by the WP.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2005/06/14/DI2005061401261.html

This is from the 16th and therefore is before his admission that he copied the original then made a copy of the copy then destroyed the copy of the original.

It is long but pretty much the past, current, and future hopes of Mr. Smith in regards to Iraq and W are crystal clear. And note that whoever was the moderator allowed in no contrary challenging questions posted by the "guests" just a slew of fellow travelers throwing slowballs into the pocket.

Sorry to burst the bubble of all the conspiracy theorists, but the DSM is supposed to be the minutes of a meeting of high level British officials. If somebody just made it up, they would've officially denied it by now, instead of just saying no comment.

What's most bizarre about the seal is that, if you magnify the image in Photoshop, it appears to be a *raised* seal.

It may be a photocopy and the raised seal has merely been duplicated as a function of shadow. It doesn't look that way to me, however. It may be an original. There's no way it's simply been retyped on plain paper using an old typewriter.

I suppose it's possible that the seal could have been duplicated using a rubber stamp and then photocopied, but then it's evident that the journalist's story is a complete lie.

"If somebody just made it up, they would've officially denied it by now, instead of just saying no comment."

Liberals at CBS tried that argument with the forged military document debacle. "It has to be true since the Pentagon didn't deny it" was something they were quite fond of repeating over and over again.
