I wasn't there but that's the story. The bet was that Hubbard couldn't invent a religion and attract actual followers. It supposedly went to Hubbard's head when he actually got followers to join up (Think of trekies or the star wars fanatics)so he wrote more. The more fantastic his religion/fiction got, the more committed his followers got. They even interpreted his somewhat early death as proof that he had to move on to a higher plane.

This is probably no different from what many "prophets" have done over the ages. I have my own list of likely charlatans but propriety suggests I not offend their followers here.

Scientology = Star Trek for the dumb. It is compelete with UFOs. Nothing but a con for the weak minded and thick checkbook crowd. It isn't even a cult, just a scam.
