Newburgh Hey, America!
Are you ready for another President Bush?
No, not Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the president's brother.
We're talking about Laura Bush, the first lady.
Scoff if you want, but a small (four or five members right now) ad hoc committee has formed right here in Newburgh, and its goal is to promote Mrs. Bush as the next president of the United States.
Town of Newburgh resident Richard Lang says they're quite serious. "I don't see anybody else on the horizon who can win," Lang said.
Not even former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani?
"Maybe Giuliani would make a good vice president," he said.
Mrs. Bush, a former teacher and librarian, has never held public office, nor has she publicly expressed interest in running. And she certainly isn't on the radar of local political leaders for the 2008 race.
Bill DeProspo, Orange County's Republican chairman, calls her "a great lady" but thinks it's unlikely she would run.
Jonathan Jacobson, the county's Democratic chairman, bluntly said he doesn't take the idea seriously.
"By 2008, the country is going to want a complete change from the Bush administration," he said.
The idea of a Laura Bush candidacy apparently was fueled when Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, recently suggested a matchup between Mrs. Bush and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton seen by many as a front-runner for the Democrats in 2008 during an appearance on "Larry King Live." The vice president, also on the show, predicted Mrs. Bush would win that race.
But according to Peter Watkins, Laura Bush's deputy press secretary, the first lady has no political aspirations.
"She and the president are looking forward to returning to Crawford, Texas, at the end of his term," Watkins said.
But Lang is hopeful the next three years and a strong show of public sentiment can change those plans. He calls the first lady "a pretty bright gal" who's got strong views on key issues like education policy.
And, he said, "She has a very persuasive way about her."
So Lang and his fellow committee members plan to start lining up additional supporters and potential funding sources, starting in Newburgh and then spreading out to other parts of Orange County, then Dutchess, Westchester and Rockland counties and beyond.
And then?
"We'll see what response we get," Lang said.
Laura wouldn't even consider this.
Cheney/Rice
Why? Laura Bush isn't presidential material.
Town of Newburgh resident Richard Lang says they're quite serious. "I don't see anybody else on the horizon who can win," Lang said.
Either this guy is a complete whackjob, or hes a democratic knucklehead up to shenanigans.
This is so stupid. America is not looking for an FDR like hold on power.
No.
There are those who would like nothing more than to see Laura from '08 to '16, Jeb from '16 to '24, and then the Bush twins for another 16 years.
I greatly admire our classy and delightful First Lady, but I don't believe she has the slightest inclination to get into politics, aside from the role she holds right now.
How 'bout Barney, though? I might vote for him. ;-)
I like Laura Bush but she isn't presidential material.
Oh I get it. If he promotes the Laura wants to be president angle, that translates into a "she's not so crazy after all" Hillary endorsement.
Your right. He's a complete democrat knucklehead whackjob.
I agree, but have to ask: since when is that a criterion?
Race says she wouldn't run for class president.
Now there's a Freudian Slip...
***Why? Laura Bush isn't presidential material.***
Ronald Reagan was once turned down for a role in a movie because he "didn't have the presidential-look."
=P
Not that I think Mrs. Bush would be presidential material, just a tidbit.
Nope, lack of glasses, spell check didn't help.
