Riyadh, 20 June (AKI) - A young Saudi imam, Muhammad Bijad al-Harbi, is reported to have died in Iraq following a gunfight with American forces in the country. The Saudi newspaper Al-Watan said on Monday that the imam, who died a few days ago, was only 27 and was married, but had no children. Many young Saudis are thought to have travelled to Iraq to join the Jihad, and the newspaper begins the article on al-Harbi's death saying "the series of killings of Saudis in Iraq continues."
Al-Harbi was the imam of a mosque in the Al-Rawda area of the city of Al-Bureida, where he was born and where his family still lives. It is thought he left for Iraq before obtaining his degree in Sharia law, at the Imam Muhammad Al-Saud University of Qasim. The news of his death is said to have shocked his family so much that his mother has been admitted to hospital for several days. his funeral has already been held.
Al-Harbi died along with another young Saudi, Fahad Abdullah al-Shaaban, 25, who also lived at Al-Bureida. The newspaper says the two young men travelled to Iraq overland via Jordan and the Syrian border. From Syria they were helped into Iraq by an Islamic group operating in the area, who showed them a secret route onto Iraqi territory. They had only spent 20 days in Iraq, during which they had fought several gun battles against the American forces.
