I know what you're saying. It's why I tried to get it up on FR as fast as I could, because I wanted others to see it and put in their two-cents. It did not leave a contrail, it showed what looked like a reentry burn. When we first spotted it, it looked like it was simply hovering, the way comets look when you see them -- you can't tell that they're travelling a zillion miles a minute. When I got out the binocs, you could then see that it was indeed moving, and toward terra firma. Only speculation is that it's a top-secret craft ... covert but overt!

Depending on the dryness of the air, aircraft can leave long or short contrails. Note in the picture that a big x is left by aircraft flying through moist air, but another aircraft seen in the center is flying in drier air and leaving a much shorter contrail. You can go to sleep knowing that you got excited over nothing more than a plane.
