The Fort MacArthur Museum Association
Announces the Dates, Times and Details
of it’s 19th Annual "Old Fort MacArthur Days"

For Immediate Release
Tuesday June 17, 2004

The big guns of Fort MacArthur, the former guardian of the Los Angeles Harbor will roar back to life on July 9th and 10th 2005 as the Fort MacArthur Museum presents its 19th annual fundraising event "Old Fort MacArthur Days". The annual artillery show and living history event brings together historical groups from all across the country in one of the biggest historical timeline events in the western United States. This is a great opportunity to see a wide variety of historical groups ranging from as far back as the days of the Roman Empire, and back to the present, including our own American history.

The show hours are Saturday from 9:00am to 5:00pm and Sunday from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Each day features a public flag raising followed by a parade of the shows participants. After the parade, the grounds are open for the public to tour the participant encampments, view historical battle reenactments, and tour the museum. Special guests this year include a performance by Mora’s Modern Rhythmists Dance Orchestra, which will be hosted by the legendary Maxwell DeMille and an appearance by R. Lee Ermey "The Gunny", host of the hit cable TV Series MAIL CALL on The History Channel.

This is the nineteenth year the Fort MacArthur Museum has produced this event and every year the show gets bigger and bigger so if you haven’t joined us for some time, now is the perfect time to join us again. All of the proceeds from the show are used to benefit our restoration, preservation, and education programs. Admission to the event each day is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 12.

Food and refreshments are available for purchase; parking at the museum is always free.

To reach the Fort MacArthur Museum and Angels Gate Park, travel south on the 110 (harbor) freeway, exit at Gaffey Street in the community of San Pedro. Continue south on Gaffey Street past 36th street and turn right on Leavenworth Drive. Additional information is also available on our website at www.ftmac.org

From www.legionsix.org:

Home Page of Legion Six Victorious,
the Greater Los Angeles area's premier Roman reenactment society.

Twenty centuries ago, the original Legio VI Victrix distinguished itself as a fighting and civilizing force, bringing the enemies of Rome to heel and teaching them the benefits of civilization. Today's Legio VI Victrix recreates a garrison camp near the Roman city of Eburacum (modern York) in the province of Britannia. Our members portray the foot soldiers and officers of the legion, as well as the civilian denizens of a Roman provincial city. Our time frame is AD 130-160, during the reigns of the Emperors Hadrian and Antoninus Pius.

We strive to inform, educate, and entertain both ourselves and the public, and to have lots of fun along the way! Toward these goals, we take part in film and television productions, military timelines, historical faires and other special events, as well as give educational presentations throughout Southern California. To help stay fit, we conduct marches in full kit once each month. We also take part in "experimental archaeology" to help historians investigate how the Romans may have done things. Finally, we enjoy the special camaraderie of a shared fascination with this important historical epoch.

From www.theredcompany-1471.org/:
THE RED COMPANY - 1471

The Red Company is a group of avid history buffs who think there's more to history than dates, dead guys, and boring catalogs of facts compiled by dried up historians.

Our goal is to know how people really lived during the period of history known as the Wars of the Roses. Several times a year, the Company portrays a continental military company in the service of Burgundy in the year 1471. During these encampments, we sleep in tents, cook our meals over a fire, shoot crossbows, fight with swords and pollarms, drill with pikes and ride our horses in armour. More than merely acting a part, we actually live the life of a medieval person for a few fleeting days.

Being enthusiastic about history doesn't mean that we subscribe to the theory that life in the late 15th century was grim and the people we portray humorless. Acknowledging that people are people, regardless of the year, our members enjoy boisterous feasting, gambling, the comradely raising of cups, games and music. We compete with each other in good natured contests such as shooting at the butts, football and other activities in addition to the more serious activities of marching, drilling and camp routine.
