Stiff Competition Expected For Third Tight End Position
By Nick Eatman DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer June 16, 2005, 5:55 PM (CDT)
IRVING, Texas - With the start of training camp less than two months away, there are a handful of positions wide open, not only in need of a starter but backups as well.
Of course, there is free safety and right tackle. There also could be some hot competition at linebacker and center.
But that is not the case at tight end.
Jason Witten made sure of that with his performance last year, setting several club records and earning his first Pro Bowl selection in just his second season in the league.
And if Witten's emergence as one of the game's best tight ends isn't encouraging enough for the Cowboys in 2005, then the return of veteran Dan Campbell, one of the team's best blockers, likely closes the door on any other tight ends, injury aside, getting much playing time.
That means there is little room for error for the rest of the bunch, all battling for what probably will be only one other roster spot available at tight end.
The Cowboys rarely keep more than three tight ends on the 53-man roster, and that normally doesn't include veteran deep snapper Jeff Robinson, who has served as the goal-line and short-yardage tight end the past two seasons, catching four passes for four touchdowns.
So that means the likes of Sean Ryan, Brett Pierce and rookie free agent Tony Curtis will have to be in top form come training camp if they expect to make the 53-man roster.

I couldn't help myself, so here is a little self indulgent Cowboys stuff. This is the one area where the Cowboys have no holes. Between Jason Witten, Dan Campbell, and Jeff Robinson this position is solid. These guys will allow the offense to be alot better this season.

Reminds me of the punter competition in Cleveland twenty years ago. Steve Cox was defending his job against Jeff Stump, and the headline in the paper if Steve lost his job could have been "Browns Cut Cox Keep Stump".
Cox kept his job, though.

Remember the Congressional report a few years ago about the Chicom theft of nuclear secrets? It was, I kid you not, "The Cox/Dicks Report"

Heh heh...
A few years back during a World Series game featuring the Atlanta Braves, the camera showed a shot of Braves manager Bobby Cox amongst some of the players. Al Michaels chimed in, "Ah, I love to watch Cox in the dugout."
It was very quiet in the announcing booth for quite some time. Me and my buddies were rolling. Knowing how quick Al is, I'm sure he realized right away what he'd said...

You get a tight end to be a wide receiver after a while.
