The Free Republic Book Club is an informal gathering of readers and lovers of all genre of books, which meets on an irregular basis (whenever I remember to post and have a copy of the ping list available.)
If you would like to be on this ping list, please send me mail and I'll include you. If you wish to be removed, please send mail. If you already sent me mail wishing to be removed and you were pinged anyway, oops, my apologies, please request again (sorry about that).
Today's topic: what's on your summer reading list? Whether you are going on vacation, sitting on the beach or just hanging out on your front porch, there's usually a good novel nearby. Any particular plans or will it be a more serendipitous approach?
Buena suerte, amigo, con tus estudios de español.
I'll have to check out "Revolution" when it comes out. Always interested in the state of religion in the US.
Are you enjoying the book? I am contemplating getting it for my husband. He doesn't read fiction and he loved McCullough's other books. I don't know why I have hesitated in getting the book.
The Henry VIII was my fave chapter, along with the science in the time of Copernicus chapter. I usually average a book a week; this one took me two months. I thought I was well-versed in history until I read it! :) Now I'm hooked and need to pick up the other volumes.
You can often find complete, or near-complete sets in used books stores, usually in pretty good condition. I got mine free when I joined a book club years ago. I've found them comforting to read. It's good to know that people have always been as stupid, greedy and evil as they are now. And I love WD's occasional humorous insights.
"I'm reading 1984 (Orwell), and after that will come The Brothers Karamazov (Fyodor Dostoevsky). "
I am on 1984 now. I have read The Brothers Karamazov. It is one of my favorites.
Yes, I have; I'm anxiously awaiting the new one!
It sounds like envy to me, too. I think it is neat that he and his wife could collaborate like that.

Just finished the third volume of the Gingrich/Forstchen alternate history of the Civil War. Next up is McCullough's "1776" then probably Lind's "What Lincoln Believed: The Values and Convictions of America's Greatest President" or Wert's "The Sword of Lincoln: The Army of the Potomac". After that we'll see.
Years ago I was a Steinbeck fan. I read TWC then, but did not think it was any good - compared to his other work.
Have you read much of JS? What are your thoughts on his political leanings?
If you liked Boys Life, you might enjoy this one, too. It is in paperback, two volumes.
Second Touch - definitely will check it out. Shades of The Red Tent?
Life of Pi - We had one of our best book club discussions on this
Reading Lolita - I thoroughly enjoyed this book as a glimpse into Iran during the revolution
Brothers Karamazov - liked it but it took me forever to read. It was definitely an eating an elephant book (one bite at a time)
"I promised myself at one point I'd get through Proust's "Swann's Way" - this summer seems ideal."
Seeing's how there's seven volumes total , you better hurry, June is almost gone ;)
I am not familiar with the first three titles. Looked at SpookBrat's post. The Second Touch sounds interesting. Thanks.
Muchas Gracias. Puedo leer y yo comprendo bien, pero no puedo hablar.
I'm reading Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley". It's awesome!
I loved that book too. Steinbeck is my favorite author.
"Grape Man of Texas: The Life of T. V. Munson" by Sherrie S. McLeRoy and Roy E. Renfro, Jr., Ph.D.
