The U.S. army said Thursday it launched a major security operation in central and southern Iraq to stem mounting violence.
A statement by the army said an estimated 1,000 U.S. troops carried an all-out security operation dubbed "White Shield" involving raids and searches of houses and suspected insurgent hideouts in Hulla.
It said at least seven gunmen were arrested and arms, including ammunition, weapons and 10 kilograms (more than 20 pounds) of explosives, were seized.
