Please forgive my obtuseness but I don't understand what the "them", "what they did," and "such action" refer to in the following--even after checking my post that it refers to.

This is a time for them to reflect on what they did to provoke such an action.

The "victims." You see, it is supposedly never the perpetrators fault. The victim must always ask what he did to provoke the actions of the perpetrator.
