San Francisco, Jun. 15, 2005 (CNA) - A ruling this week by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld an earlier decision that Holocaust survivors can continue their claims against the Vatican for the restitution of funds plundered from former Yugoslavia during the Second World War.
The majority of the victims of genocide in Croatia during World War II were Orthodox Christian Serbs. More than 500,000 of them were liquidated by the Croatian Ustasha, with the backing of some Catholic clerics. These funds have been referred to as the Ustasha or Croatian treasury.
According to a report by Matt Abbott, the San Francisco court denied a Vatican petition for reconsideration and a request for an extraordinary en banc hearing. It also issued an amended opinion which indicated the Italian Peace Treaty of 1947 did not preclude the lawsuit because the Vatican was not a signatory to the treaty.

And, just this week, 350,000 members of the United Methodist Church of Virginia, voted to follow the Presbyterian Church of the USA and divest itself of any financial connection to Israel. They back the Palestinians. Can you believe it???

I agree. This is about much more than money to the victims. The importance of the money is getting the perpetrators to own up to their crimes and getting the attention of the world.

SCOTUS would just reverse them, like they do with 80% of their rulings that go up to SCOTUS.
Yeah, like this case is going to get anywhere at all. Like the Vatican is going to pay more than a moment's attention to this. Boy, what a bunch of money hungry jackals there are out there, the lawyers leading the parade.

If the U.S. courts become a forum for all the injustice in the world, we won't have justice for ourselves, nor will we be able to afford the judges, lawyers and support staff to handle it.
This is a problem between the Vatican and the Serbs - if it is a problem.
The Vatican is no more responsible for the actions for a few renegade clerics than the U.S. is responsible for Abu Graib. But thats another issue I suppose and one that's certainly not any of our affair.

The point is that there was this horrid camp Jasenovic in Croatia( you can read more about it at the Holocaust Museum web site). Please do if you have the time. The leaders of Croatia were rabid Serb, Jew and Gypsy haters during WWII. They had the support of several so-called "clergy" who aided in the mass murders. Unfortunate, but true.
Somehow, the moneys and the property of the victims, it is ALLEGED, found their way into the Vatican treasury when the commies gained control of Croatia under Tito.
Now, before you get upset.... this is alleged... but there is some proof of funds disappearing into Italy.
I doubt if any money will ever be paid out to a soul.
However, the Swiss banks did have to pay money to Holocaust victims and their survivors on a case with similiar evidence.
I want more people to know more about the holocaust. All aspects of it.
This case may only result in facts coming out which will condemn those FEW so-called Clergy of Croatia and those nazi political leaders who were villians and actully, serve to vindicate the Vatican as a whole.
We shall see what happens.
