Hell, he was at a whorehouse. He may have been an officer, but he was no gentleman and he was obviously more worried about how this would look for his military career than helping anyone.
P.S. Other websites are saying that this was a petty officer. Enlisted man. Probably married.
He was a US Navy Petty Officer....and enlisted man. He wasn't supposed to be hanging out at brothels so he didn't report it at the time for fear of being punished.

Maybe the Naval officer was somewhere he wasn't supposed to be. Or involved in activity that was unbecoming to a military officer and didn't want to have to testify in court.
That was my question when I first read that. Why not call someone and stay with her until help arrived? It's all too strange and bizarre.
