WASHINGTON Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist says the autopsy released yesterday on Terri Schiavo (SHY'-voh) brings a "very sad chapter to a close."
The surgeon had questioned Schiavo's diagnosis during the debate last March on whether to remove her feeding tube. But he told A-B-C this morning the report shows Schiavo had devastating brain damage.
Frist says he never made his own diagnosis in the case. But he did argue there wasn't enough information on the woman's condition to justify removing her feeding tube. Frist helped push through emergency legislation aimed at prolonging Schiavo's life by allowing her case to be reviewed in federal court.
Commenting on C-B-S, Frist says the pathology shows the diagnosis was "exactly right," and he says it's time to move on.
Polls found most Americans opposed federal involvement in the case, and the issue helped contribute to a drop in approval ratings for the Republican-controlled Congress.
In all honesty and sincerity. If he isn't married, he should be. He's living in a house with two fatherless children.
Yes, actually it is.
The term "permanent vegetative state" was coined by neurosurgeons Bryan Jennett and Fred Plum in 1972 to describe a condition resulting from severe brain damage.
OK. And I know how much you enjoy interacting with an intelligent woman such as myself, as you put it. :)
Of course! I wouldn't have it any other way! :)
Your link to the AP article at the Washington Post reveals the following headline:
"Frist Stands by Statements on Schiavo"
Frist's actual statement as reported is nuanced and reasonable. He does not reverse himself or back down. The headline should not be allowed to mischaracterize his whole response.
Good catch.
I just can't hardly believe anyone would try to mischaracterize Frist's beliefs and actions on this matter. No way would the AP do that.....sarcasm off/
Washing their hands and moving on. But some of us will never forget.
A Scientologist, no doubt.
Well the WHOLE WORLD was in that conspiracy. It is growing at a exponential rate. Imagine not wanting to pump MORE millions of dollars into a lost cause the nerve!
So he is denying that she was smiling, laughing at jokes, and praying with Father Pavone?
Fanaticism could care less about reality.
The bigger and remaining issue to me has always been the barbaric practice of allowing this slow death to occur, and apparently it's an accepted and common practice in ALL states. I don't think most of us who have signed "living wills" have ever before been aware of that possibility.
Dr. Frist is 100% pro-life.....please, let us not try to characterize him in any other way. He was against starving Terri to death and is still against it. He will work to appoint judges that will not allow that to happen in the future.
Dr. Frist was against removing the feeding tube.
Terri's brain was functioning well enough for her to breathe on her own, sleep and wake just like the rest of us, etc. And Terri's family believes Terri responded - actually there's proof of that. It makes my skin crawl that they said Terri was blind as if that was just another good reason to bump her off.
The autopsy report is just a bunch of mumbo jumbo. Terri was killed and that's the bottom line. She was healthy and 13 days later she was dead. It's a horrific event. I still can't believe it happened. And now the death-to-Terri crowd just can't stop gloating and celebrating. It gives me the creeps.
Reindeer can fly.
I do not believe there is a "death to Terri" crowd on this forum, and no one is celebrating that I have seen. It was and is a tragedy and everyone acknowledges that in these discussions. But there are facts involved and perhaps emotions have clouded a perception of reality at times. And a conspiracy that involves so many? It just does not seem likely, Saundra. But your sincere concern and devotion for this lady have always been touching.
If he's not, he should be.
