There are something like 24,000 Christian denomination in the U.S. alone. These denominations, for the most part, divide along interpretations of particular Scriptures.

Actually, it was the witches that burned Christians at the stake in a frame-up/cover-up scandal to enable witchcraft to continue in that region.

Ahh, I see. Thanks for revealing the true story. ;-)

If they were actually fundamentalist Christians, they would know that the only sacrifice acceptable to God is the One that He Himself made on the cross. So, either the writer of the article or the churches he wrote about are mis-using the term fundamentalist christian. Many un-christian acts are comitted under the label christianity, but it does not make them christian. The crusades and witch burning are two good examples.

Funny, Fundamentalists always said it was we Catholics who were killing babies in human sacrifices when I was growing up.

I thought it was that the Catholics all had guns in the basement! Of course, we Lutherans did too :)

A sacrifice is something of value willingly given to another. Sacrifices in the OT were the most valuable animals. The sacrifice of God is His blood given on the cross. In the OT the animal sacrificed was considered to be pure. Jesus was pure. Burned witches were not considered pure and therefor could not be a sacrifice. After all, what value did the witches have to the ones burning them. What sacrifice was made on the part of the ones lighting the fires. Sure the witches might have felt they were being sacrificed, but the ones burning them were not giving up anything. The witches were not being killed for their goodness or value; they were sentenced to death for their sin, just like with the death penalty today. They were not offered to God as a sacrifice, they were sent to God for judgement. Big difference.
If I give you something I value little, what sacrifice have I made? If I give you something I want to get rid of, what sacrifice have I made? Does it honor you? If I give you something I value or need, then it is a sacrifice and honors YOU as more valuable than that which was sacrificed.

Wouldn't the sacrifice of a human life be considered valuable? If someone gives you a human life, wouldn't that be a great honor?

If it were theirs to give... the only one who can sacrifice a human life is the human it belongs to. Otherwise it is murder.

We cannot truly offer or sacrifice what is not ours.

Well... unless I've massively misunderstood the OT, *everything* is Gods. That goat to sacrifice... that's Gods. That village of Canaanites... they are Gods as well.

The value of a human life. If not... then abortion is as equally value-free.

> What sacrifice was made on the part of the ones lighting the fires.

Humanity, honor, dignity come to mind.

Not everyone believes as you do....leaders of countries do it all the time.

Is it murder to kill someone innocent through collateral damage during warfare?

>>>I see def'n 1A to be perfectly appropriate. "The act of offering something to a deity in propitiation or homage" seems a good description of killing people because a deity tells you to.

To be able to offer something, it must first be yours to offer. Killing because a deity tells you to is not sacrifice in any sense. It is what it is: killing because you think a diety told you to. It is killing not sacrafice. One does not own the person they kill and cannot therefore offer them in any real way.

If I offer you something that is not mine and follow through with it; I am first a liar and then a thief.

God gave animals to man to have dominion over them. So while yes they are God's, God has shared them with us. In return, the animals that were most valued by man at that time in history, were offered back to Him as a sacrifice.

God gave animal to man, man highly valued animal, man sacrificed animal to God.

3 essential aspects of sacrifice: 1. It must have value. 2. It must be yours to offer. 3. It must be given willingly.

Does anyone that commits murder see the life of one they kill as valuable? I never said it was not a horrible thing. I only said it was not a sacrifice as one cannot sacrifice that which is not theirs. Abortion is not a sacrifice either, it is murder.

> What sacrifice was made on the part of the ones lighting the fires.

While that is what they lost or possibly did not possess in the first place, none of those things were sacrificed. Had they known that is what they were losing, they might not have done it. It was never explicitly offered, it was sadly at best, lost.
