CHICAGO -- Illinois Senator Dick Durbin says he won't apologize for comments comparing American interrogators at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Nazis and Soviet gulags.
News of the Democrat's comparison created a buzz around the Internet today, fueled by sound bites of yesterday's Senate floor speech on radio talk shows. By this afternoon, Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna asked Durbin to apologize.
Durbin says the Bush administration should apologize for abandoning the Geneva Conventions.
Human-rights activist groups and some lawmakers -- mostly Democrats -- want Bush to close the prison.
But administration officials say some of the people who have been detained at Guantanamo later return to fight against the United States.
"American soldiers make do with C-rations. Dinner on an America West flight from New York to Las Vegas consists of one small bag of peanuts. Meanwhile, one recent menu for suspected terrorists at Guantanamo consisted of orange-glazed chicken, fresh fruit crepe, steamed peas and mushrooms, and rice pilaf. Sounds like the sort of thing you'd get at Windows on the World — if it still existed."
I'm sure that, if anything, the RNC will be able to muster up the nerve to call his statements "disappointing," after telling us what a great fellow he is.

And when Rick Santorum made a Hitler reference but only in a general sense...he didn't compare anyone to Hitler, he was raked over the coals for days....and the dems had it in their talking points for weeks...
Durbin was calling our troops the same as the people that put the Jews in the extermination camps, the Russian people in the Gulags, and the Cambodians that murdered millions of people for nothing!!!
Why hasn't the military leaders --- Rummy come out and asked for an explanation and apology?
I think that John McCain could get up on the Senate floor and talk about the difference between the way he was treated as a POW, and what Durbin accused our troops of doing!!! If he wants to be a presidential candidate he should!
You know what we need on our side? Harsh rhetoric. It's the only thing that gets the attention of the MSM.
We need a flamethrower on our side who gets up there and demands Doofus retract this ridiculous comment and challenge the Democrats to get on OUR side--and NOT STOP until they stop this coddling crap.

From what I have seen lately, the most likely candidate to do just that would be Jeff Sessions, with George Allen as a darkhorse.
Michael Savage called him Turbin Durbin. Durbin is nothing short human scum. He tries to come on as this folksy uncle charlie type but in fact there is almost no difference between him and Michael Moore. What does it say about Illinois that those people would elect him and someone as funtionally illiterate as Cheryl Mosely Braun?

Oh, I see the same letters to the editor down here in Southern Illinios as well. Almost to a man - they are written by members of our local 'peace coalition'.
It is part of a nationwide (probably ANSWER-led) campaign to make everyone who reads the paper think that the whole nation thinks like these socialists/communists/creeps.
It's amazing how many people are taken in by that.
