Flash back to 2001 article : The ex-Klansman later filibustered the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act -- supported by a majority of those "mean-spirited" Republicans -- for more than 14 hours. He also opposed the nominations of the Supreme Court's two black justices, liberal Thurgood Marshall and conservative Clarence Thomas. In fact, the ex-Klansman had the gall to accuse Justice Thomas of "injecting racism" into the Senate hearings. Meanwhile, author Graham Smith recently discovered another letter Sen. Byrd wrote after he quit the KKK, this time attacking desegregation of the armed forces.

I would say former Klansman would be more appropriate than ex-Klansman.
I'm sure he is still a grand dragon at heart.

So Bob 3K has never been really repentant about his earlier Klan involvement? Big surprise there.
*******Coming soon to a theatre near you, Sen. Robert Byrd starring in "Byrd in the Hood",
the story of a grandfatherly, Klansmen type and his whimsical misadventures in South Central. "A true buddy film, if ever there was one" says Roger Ebert.*******

I'd love to see sheets Byrd and ask him face to face if he had the balls to say that word to me.

Sheets should be in Gitmo with the rest of the terrorist.
He's a disgrace to mankind and shouldn't even be on American soil.

If this ex-Klansman were a conservative Republican, he would never hear the end of his sordid past.No doubt about that.

Rush cracked me up today when he recounted the Newsmax article about the FR DC Chapter sit in at Byrd's office and their interview where Byrd's spokesman "didn't know" if Sheets participated in any lynchings or burned any crosses way back when. Too funny...

I wonder when Robert Byrd (KKK-WV) is going to disclose any lynching he may have been involved in during his KKK days.
When oh when is he going to apologize for his past Klan activities.
Will Robert C. Byrd (KKK-WV) resign from the Senate as an act of atonement for his past (and probably present) racist views.
Hmmmmmmmm. Guess not.

1946? Ol' Sheets must have been a strapping young buck of 50 when he said that!
To: Das Outsider
LOL! Actually, he was an able-bodied young man who could have easily served in the U.S. Armed Forces in the Second World War, had he been willing to condescend to serve alongside what he described as "race mongrels."
IMHO the old fraud was just plain scared.

Sheets has probably said it many times since. That's just the time he said it publicly.

A good freeper research project would be to look up the reported actions of the local klan during byrds membership.
It would be impossible to determine if he participated, but if it could be shown that it was likely that he was at a cross burning, or worse, it wouldn't help him any.

Hmm...I was free-associating, and the 1980 movie, "The Star Chamber," starring Michael Douglas and Hal Holbrook, popped into my mind. I wonder why?

Speaking of movies, don't forget that Byrd callously played the role of a confederate general in the film "Gods and Generals". You would think an ex klansman wouldn't touch that role with a ten foot pole.

I'd love to read the transcripts of his 14 hour filibuster back in 1963.

I've seen a lot of white niggers in my timeThis pathetic icon of the Democratic Party can't open his mouth without announcing to the world that he is a dyed in the wool, unapologetic, confirmed racist. He is an embarrassment to every citizen of the country. Please, West Virginia, vote this throwback to the dark days of lynchings and 'white only' restrooms out of office. I am white and I'm ashamed.

What's wrong with playing a Confederate general.
The Confederacy has nothing to do with racism whatsoever, and I thought that movie was one of the few good things Ted Turner has ever done. It actually gave a fair portrayal to the Southern side.
Also, for some reason, I don't think West Virginia is dumping this guy, if the reason is he's a racist.
If his views were really unpopular with the people in that state, he would have been taken down long ago. Thats something that has to be accepted.
