A warning means that a tsunami has occurred and is headed toward the coast. They probably mean a tsunami watch.

We just got the warning here in SF area about 10 minutes ago on the TV (i.e. more than 2 hours after the quake). Correction: We were warned about 1 hour after the EQ. I was thrown by the USGS reference to the EQ occurring at 6:50 pm "local time". Apparently when you're 85 miles off the Northern California coast you're in the Alaska Time zone.

Posted almost an hour after the earthquake happened to Braking News.
Actually most people don't know this, but earthquakes are caused by future possible tsunami's.
There was a smaller one 5.1 or so thirty miles from me, I didn't even feel it. Dang.
That one off Eureka would have been a 4 ticket ride...

"I'm in Southern California and Channel 9 news had about five minutes on this probably twenty minutes following the first post at FR. Haven't been able to find any reference at all to it on Fox or anywhere else. It's like a non-event. Weird." I called my son in the LA area to warn him. He was still at work and hadn't heard a word about the warning/watch. He was at an elevation of 440 ft so, no problem.

No one I called had heard anything. With the paucity of coverage I suspect most here in Orange County never even heard about the "warning" before it was canceled.
