Can you see a tsunami wave out at sea? I thought it was frequently just a one or two foot rise in sea level over a large area, until it starts to pile up as it reaches shallower water.

If this happened on the east coast we would first check to see if Teddy Kennedy was diving off his boat to take a dip first. He is capable of giving false reading on that magnitude. :)

This is another big one and it happened just off the coastline.

Live news conference at Cal-Tech: USGS won't rule out Anza triggered this one. Don't know when next big one will hit. This was strike/slip.

"he also says instead of staying inside, people would go down to the beach to look for the tsunami"

Sounds like a bunch of Darwin award candidates in waiting to me.

"That's pretty strong but they did say no tsunami risk."

Isn't that what they said in Phukett?

Tsunamis in the open ocean are rarely visible.

An ocean crossing tsunami can be as small as 1-2 cm in height. In that case the tsunami would be a large volume of water spread out, yet traveling at a high rate of speed up to about 600 mph.

The only disconcerting thing is this didn't hit the news for a long time.

Was the media asleep yesterday?

As long as you are there, it's always a good day to visit Arkansas.

Thanks for asking.

One of mine was at Ocean Beach the night before, but we live far enough inland to not worry about the big waves. We never felt this quake at all.

Wow, I hadn't heard about this yet. (I've had modem issues. It took the Comcast guy a few days to get out here and change it out. And I can't stomach TV news, even Fox is making me mad lately.)

These days, there's always the question of tsunami danger. Is that a concern here?
