Has anyone here, for or against the Patriot Act, actually read the thing?
Just curious.
I don't think they have.
Yes, I've read it.
I have, or at least I have read some of the most controversial parts.
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
--Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution
I believe the Patriot act to be an unconstitutional, kneejerk, almost to the point of being illegal, reaction to the 9/11 attacks.
It went through Congress so fast that someone had it sitting, waiting in the wings, for just such an occasion.
Don't know who, don't know why, don't know when they thought it up.
But, IMO, it's unconstitutional without repealing amendments in the BOR.
