VERBENA (AP) A huge Confederate battle flag flying over Interstate 65 north of Montgomery will become a permanent fixture, according to officials with the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The organization bought land on the side of the interstate near Verbena and put up the flag, which has been flying for several months above the tree lines from the top of a large pole, easily visible from the heavily traveled interstate.
Leonard Wilson, commander of the Alabama division of Sons of Confederate Veterans, said the flag will be dedicated in a ceremony at 5 p.m. on June 26.
The flag is located on a little more than half an acre of land just north of where Autauga County 68 crosses over the interstate, about six miles south of the Verbena exit.
"We put the flag up so people could see it," Wilson said. "We are showing off our heritage. The flag is part of our heritage."
Critics of Confederate flag displays say they are reminders of the slavery era and Alabama's racist past, and can damage Alabama's image when flown beside a busy interstate route to Gulf beaches.
Read my earlier discussion with curly Bill.
"m.eSPINola", the OPEN, hate-FILLED, ignorant, racist (he who made Anti-AmerIndian comments that were so offensive that they were "pulled" by the admin moderator AND which even he is too smart to RE-post, as he KNOWS he would be BANNED if he did.), for another.
btw, when are YOU going to get around to discussing "m.eSPINola"'s racism & throw him out of "the unionist coven" of loonies?
OR when are YOU going to demand that he RE-post #645 in it's ENTIRITY, so that everyone can see what sort of person your coven tolerates in their midst???
oh, i forgot. it's 100% A-OK to be a fool,a hater,a racist or an anti-semite IF you're a unionist, isn't it?
free dixie,sw
which CSA flag is THAT?
do YOU know?
can you describe it in 25 words or less? (NO? i thought NOT.)
ONLY ignorant, stupid people (once more-sigh!) are "offended" by the flag of dixie.

had my ancestors won their war for dixie FREEDOM, the Stars & Stripes would STILL be the flag of the USA. there would just be 13 LESS stars in the canton.
sorry, ditto, NOBODY with a BRAIN/education is buying your anti-southern bilge today.

the answer is NONE, especially since the US Army was still SELLING slaves on the New Orleans auction block nearly a YEAR later. (the sold slaves were mostly sent to the Carribean, to die in the sugarcane fields. MG Benjamin "THE BEAST" Butler & his friends in the Union Army GOT RICH from selling slaves. but then, you DO know that "inconvienient fact", don't you???)
free dixie,sw
you KNOW that "THE BEAST", a serving general officcer of the US Army, GOT RICH selling slaves, while military governor of south Louisiana.
was THAT "inconvienient fact" OK with YOU?
free dixie,sw
i'm truly sorry to hear that YOU are that ignorant, foolish & "sissified".

please enlighten me.

Since you are degenerating this discussion into uncivility, I am going to bow out. I regret that it has to end this way, but that's it, since I am not going to get involved in a counterproductive "he said, she said" slogging match here.
The last large Klan rally in DC took place in 1928, long before the Confederate Battle Flag was usurped by the so-called States Rights Democrats as a symbol of their resistance resistance to desegregation.
Try again chief.
PITY.
free dixie,sw
Thank You! It's a pretty flag and it makes me kinda warm inside. I fly the "Bonnie Blue".
That's pretty!
sorry, but you're WRONG, as usual.
try again.
fwiw, i was in the ANTI-klan "demonstators" that day. i'm proud to tell you that there were more of "us" than there was of the klan-idiots that day.

Wow, calling me a coward over the Internet. Truly, you are a braver man than I. And once again, I am not American, thus "boys in blue" is a false association.

Navy Jack.
"What is usually called "The Confederate Flag" or "The Confederate Battle Flag" (actually the Navy Jack as explained above) is still a widely-recognized symbol. The display of the flag is controversial and a very emotional issue, generally because of disagreement over exactly what it symbolizes. To many in the US South it is simply a symbol of regional pride and heritage. Others see it as a symbol of the institution of slavery which the Confederate government defended, or of the Jim Crow laws enforcing racial segregation in the Southern States for almost a century later. According to Civil War historian and southerner Shelby Foote, the flag traditionally represented the south's resistance to northern political dominance generally; it became racially charged during the Civil Rights Movement, when protecting segregation suddenly became the focal point of that resistance."
That about sum this entire thing up? Calm down, stop insulting people and if you feel yourself getting a little too emotional, walk away from the thread.
It was a pleasure talking with the rest of you, by the by.
the south has RISEN. pass the word.
my first cousin recently donated a "plot of land" along I-30 (east of Dallas, TX) to erect a 100 foot flagpole with a 30x30 foot ANV-pattern CSA battleflag, by fall.
then EVERYONE coming to/from "BIG D" can get a THRILL!

Totally agree with your decision to exit. See my post #388. When something ceases to be productive, why bother?
pray tell us which. (i suspect ignorance is the truthful answer. NO southerner would make that mistake, but then you're Canadian [which i had forgotten-mea culpa!], so we'll "cut you some slack".)
the Canadians that i KNOW don't "run from a fight" either, because things got "less than civil". you might try reading CROSS-BORDER WARRIORS for more of the story.
fwiw, one of the southland's proudest & best CSA units in 1861-1865 was CANADIAN & one of our best CSA reenactment units now is from Ontario = the 10th Louisiana Infantry, sometimes called LEE's FOREIGN LEGION.
the 10th Louisiana DID NOT RUN from the fight in 1862 at the Cornfield & the new 10th refuses to "galvanize" now.
PROUD Canadian lads in GRAY, THEN & NOW!.
free dixie,sw
I'm not running from a fight. But I don't believe this is a productive discussion any more: it's not a fight, it's a discussion. Except, you are turning it into a fight. And one I'd rather not participate in at that.
It was a careless oversight on my part, when I referred to the Stars and Bars, I had actually meant the Navy Jack. I apologize, and I am sorry you were offended by my mistake.
