Camera of Sean Penn, Journalist, Confiscated in Iran

NEW YORK Iran was rocked by bombings on Sunday, killing at least nine and wounding more than 30, as dozens of journalists from around the world gathered in advance of the presidential election this Friday. One of those journalists, actor Sean Penn--covering the events for the San Francisco Chronicle--was involved in a separate incident, and had his video camera confiscated for a time.

Several hundred women at a sit-in outside the entrance to Tehran University demanded rights revoked after the 1979 Islamic revolution. As chants and taunts arose, police and plainclothesmen surrounded the demonstrators, pushing away those trying to join the group. Officials also cut off cell phone service in the area, and challenged reporters nearby.

In the process, they briefly seized the video camera of Penn, 44, who arrived in Iran as a reporter for his friend Phil Bronstein, editor of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Penn was spotted on Friday with a notebook in hand covering a prayer service. He has also written about his visits to Iraq for the Chronicle.

One of the five bombs that exploded Sunday went off in the center of Tehran. The violence was the most serious in Iran in more than a decade.

Maybe that will get the attention of the masses who think Islam is nothing to fear. Or maybe it will be another thing to blame on Bush.

Have no fear, he's sure to return and repeat the claim that the Tehran bombings were our fault

It was the US fault and Tony Stuart's fault, both are blamed for every acident that happens anywhere. (Tony Stuart is a NASCAR driver that is blamed for almost every acident on the track ie....he caused every one of Jr.'s flat tires today, I just know he did.)

When cameras are outlawed, only Western infidel dogs will own cameras.

I'm sure he'll find some way to blame Bush for all the violence. Yeah, he'll penn it on him all right.

BUT the sword is mightier than the Penn.

As big a loser as his blacklisted father. Apple didn't fall far at all. Geez - you think he'd have learned.

Most Hollywood synchopants rant endlessly in total ignorance. You have to give Penn some credit for actually going.

I agree. He's got some real cojones to do that. It's possible he may have a "conversion" experience when he goes over there. We'll have to wait and see what he writes.

"no credit to Sean...he went for the publicity."

You may be right that he wanted publicity for his politics, but personal publicity? I doubt it. Someone as famous as he is wants privacy for himself and his family. He's hounded by tabloids and paparazzi. Maybe he just wants to be taken seriously.
