grand canyon, las vegas.
reagan library in california.
If you're a rock and roll fan, hit Cleveland for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The art museum here is also world class, if that's an interest. Ohio State U has some pretty serious agronomy stuff going....have the Missus contact them first. The next stop would be Detroit and Greenfield Village.
Others can take it from here...

Before you head to the great South(west) be sure to visit the City Courthouse, Gary, Indiana.
Great BBQ in Lockhart, then continue to San Antonio for the Alamo. The reason Aussie's and Texans get along...the natural attraction for independence, and wheels off fun. You show up here in Dallas and I'll take you to Billy Bobs in Ft. Worth.
Don't miss the Library of Congress.
I was thinking of Arizona as my last stop and flying from there to Hawaii then to Sydney.
Boston is a Great town, lots of History
Philadelphia (same)
Wash you already have on your List
If you are going to Texas make sure and hit Austin and San Antonio (it's only an hour or so drive away)
St. Louis lots of good food and good people
New Orleans is a great town and there's alot to do, easily spend 2-3 days there in the French Quarter etx
Try and Catch a Ball game (Minor or Major)at all these towns, It's a great way to spend and afternoon and you can get a feel of the Towns and their people that you won't get anywhere else
My state is nice.
You might want to visit the Gettysburg battlefield when you're in the D.C. area; it's about an hour and a half north. In Texas I'd definitely stop in San Antonio and have a look at the Alamo. San Francisco is also nice to visit (though I wouldn't want to live there). Actually, there are too many interesting sites to visit in an 8-week trip; you'll never get them all in. Try to plan around the things that interest you specifically.
yosemite national park, zion national park, santa fe new mexico
Go to the West. Bryce Park, the Grand Canyon north rim as well as south rim. Arches park, Moab Utah....fun stuff.
The Redwoods of California are wonderful( or were the last time I saw them), North of SF. If you come to Texas, try the Hill Country and Austin area.(North of San Antonio.) If your really hungry, go to Houston, everyone eats out here and the food is actually great. cheap too. For history, DC is probably your smart choice. I just got to visit for 2 days, could have spent a month there.
Find a shooting range that rents machine guns. Have fun!
Seriously, please try to get to Williamsburg and Yorktown, Virginia, and the home of President George Washington in Mt. Vernon, Va.
You really get a feel for early America in those places. I still would love to go there and I have been to those places many, many times.
Glad you are coming for a visit!!
Vacation Iowa!!!
What I'd really love to do would be some serious hunting in the US, but the legal hoops you've got to jump through (plus the costs) put it out of my reach.
I would check out the numerous hotels in Alexandria, Virginia section known as Crystal City. That's where I stay when FReeping in DC.
The Crystal City underground shopping area and the nearby Pentagon City shopping mall are easily accessed from the Crystal City hotels. There is a metro stop there and the metro is inexpensive and will take you everywhere. You can get a weekly or day pass.
Crystal City is only two metro stops from the Pentagon.
There are many good eateries on 23rd street just a few blocks from many of the hotels.
Oh wow can I come. I love Billy Bob's. I heard they closed it down. Glad to hear it was just a vicious rumor.
