TEL AVIV, Israel, June 12 (UPI) -- Washington has imposed "tough sanctions" on Israel following a crisis over a deal in which Israel sold drones to China and undertook to maintain them.
The deal for the sale of Harpy drones was signed in 1999 and the United States maintained it was done behind its back.
The Haaretz newspaper said the United States is demanding Israel provide details on more than 60 defense deals it concluded with China in recent years. The Bush administration wants the Israeli government to scrutinize such deals much more carefully than in the past and punish offenders.
In the meantime Washington halted cooperation with Israel on building a new jet fighter, the JSF, ceased cooperation in developing an advanced system that would simulate the future ground battles, froze exchanges of information on developing an attack drone and halted the sale of night vision equipment, Haaretz said.
Five years ago the United States forced Israel to cancel the sale to China of an advanced airborne early warning system, the Phalcon.
Backstabbers..?
"a deal in which Israel sold drones to China and undertook to maintain them."
What's up with that?
I'm interested in just who within the Israeli gov. made the deal and why.
"more than 60 defense deals it concluded with China in recent years. "
This is not an isolated incident. What is Israel thinking?!
In light of your statement, I'm forced to revise mine:
I'm interested in just who within the Israeli gov. made these deals and why.
That the organ grinder does not need to care about the opinions of the monkey.
Must be some freetrader!
Very interesting metaphor.
yea good thing the US doesnt supply Israel's enemies with weaponry and money </s>
So many of us would REALLY like to be friends with Israel, but they keep doing this stuff.
Israel needs to stop selling weapons to China and America needs to stop deporting all our jobs to China.
