I don't think an altar is required to be saved, although I do believe that an altar (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) is used to present the Lord's Supper.

There are variations on this belief, but if you celebrate Holy Communion you hardly set the bread and wine on the floor!

If you do not celebrate Holy Communion, I would be persuaded that you are not Christian.

Let's see, I trust Jesus with my whole heart to be able to save me. I believe He is the Lord, and that He died on the cross for my sins to be forgiven, I believe he rose from the dead, and will come again. Ok, now, what else must I do to be saved?

The best altar today is within the soul, sacrificing the old sin nature through faith in our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus as our high priest before the Father in heaven.
