And there was that group of friends, women, I think, who went to some Caribbean island for vacation. They went hiking in the hills, and one lagged behind as the trail went around a bend because she was tying a loose shoe lace. When she finished and went around the corner, she found her two friends beheaded and robbed, the killers vanished. Lucky to be alive.

We all have done things that could easily have turned out disastrous. I know how blessed I have been, and so often I have done things that I knew I should not have. I think that is why this has me so upset. "It could've been me" keeps going through my mind.

Her family needs to befriend a "charles bronson" type and let him go in and do whatever needs doing...they only understand if you do to them 10 times worse than they do to you.
that scares 'em to death......and if it doesn't, shoot 'em to death!!!!!!

Yep. Are we cousins? That sounds all to familiar to who I was raised and who I raised my kids.

Moral of story: don't get drunk off you ass in a foreign country and agree to go someplace with four young local men in a car and start making out with one of them in the backseat if you are a beautiful young blond American. Just because your on vacation doesn't mean that no rules of common sense apply. This can be shortened.
Moral of story: Don't go alone with people you do not know.
Speaking to someone for two days doesn't mean you know them!

"no means no". Is another of those cute mindless phrases like "Guns Kill" .
No means no when you are a sober and responsible adult.. it means nothing when you and your associates are acting in a diminished capacity due to drugs or alcohol. It is unfortunate she was killed. . . . Nonetheless I have 3 daughters and a son (7,16,18,23)
I tell my son (the oldest) Most young women are mindless idiots and I will have no sympathy for him if he gets drunk or takes drugs and or associates himself with drunken and or drugged out women regardless.... they are poison. That he must be treat the young women of today like the dangerous bipolar, bile filled PC "Ladies" that far to many are.
As we speak I am once again telling my girls I will show them no sympathy if they run around alone or in a group, day or night drunk and or acting like tramps.
As I said this to my daughters, I asked them
Do you know why?
My oldest just now as I write replied.
"Because she put herself in that situation".
My girls are a heck of a lot more attractive than the murdered girl..
They are also better educated as to their personal responsibilities for their own personal safety.

I think you can teach common sense by having kids bear the brunt of their actions (within reason, of course) starting at a very early age. Make them realize that their actions and decisions have consequences, good and bad.
Don't take their lunch or homework to them at school if they forget. Make them clean up their messes. I once made my daughter get some money from her piggy bank to pay for the ham and cheese she left out on the table until it was so dried and curled up that I had to throw it out. She was about 9 years old, but it never ever happened again.
I was affectionately known as a mean Mom. But things in our house rarely got broken or lost, and my furniture stayed fairly decent throughout 28 years of raising kids. They always knew they would have to make something right if they caused a problem because of their negligence or inattention. They took chances and got into trouble, of course, but they knew neither Dad nor I would tolerate any notion of blaming someone else for what they had done.

When they'd get zapped they knew what it meant! And left the blasted thing alone.Exactly. You can't teach common sense. It's something learned over time. Expecting a young boy or girl to "have" common sense is an exercise in futility.
If common sense could be taught don't you think it would have been on school's curricula for decades?

Sounds like some officials are trying to the suspects asses while others are releasing information. If not for the spotlight of the media on this situation, it would have been swept under the rug. I was thinking something similar. On one hand I'd like for the media to let LE do their job and not tell us everything so that they don't risk jeopardizing the case. One the other hand though, without the media telling us thing, LE could have tried to cover up, divert or sweep evidence under the rug to shift the blame away from the people that last saw her alive.

So if you leave the country at age five you suddenly and miraculously then become responsible?
That doesn't answer my question.

The word "teach" and the phrase "common sense" do not belong in the same sentence.

whether Perfect or Imperfect we are ALL responsible for our OWN ACTIONS!!!Easily said and agreed with. However, why does it appear that the victim is being crucified here? The Aruba water is still muddy here and no one knows the circumstances but the self-rightous have damned the victim....oh but not without prayers for her and her family. GAG.
Same as with the runaway bride....hundreds of posts saying the groom did it....because he looked weird. No one knew the facts then either but hey....when did facts matter to them or the NYT?
