Most adults don't know how to protect themselves from bad people.
Lets remember they could have and probably did spike her drink or drinks and apparently they spent alot of time plying the tourists at that joint. Secondly there were more than fourty of her friends at the spot hence there SHOULD have been at least several of the Chaperones present using their more mature common sense and experience to note any of their charges were getting out of hand and taking them back themselves.This looks like a bunch of Chaperones who couldn't watch over themselves let alone their charges!
You're right. We both were (haven't spoken in quite some time due to moves, etc.)/are thankful for our friendship backi then. And, that's a good point, I've not left friends and gone off w guys by myself.

Oh, that's nonsense. I might be older than dirt, but my folks told me, from the time I was able to understand (and maybe before), to never, ever go someplace with a stranger. I can't even imagine getting into a car with three men, and she should not have been able to, either. That, my friend, is bad judgment, and it likely led to tragedy.

Exactly, but don't come on what is otherwise an adult forum and blame the child for bad judgment.
A seventeen-year-old can be preached to daily about the evil in the world but when the chips are down they will still be trusting, naive and make the wrong decision.

Not only should women not leave a public gathering to be alone with a man, or three in this case, but a male should not do the same...with a male or female! Males are far more prone to violence than women, but I would be sure to tell at least one close friend if I were leaving with a female, and just whom this female is! Establish an identity and notify friends.
I have noticed a clear effort by the authorities in Aruba, and likewise the press, stop mentioning that she was drinking at Carlos and Charlies. One spokesman even stopped himself mid word.
That's the biggest rub for me.
Not one of the 124 or so were so close to her that they'd let that happen....
Not one that would go just to be a chaperone themself, even if it meant just hanging around making sure she got home safe after she had some fun with this one guy...
This whole part never made sense to me...
Guys can tend to dump other guys off and leave em in a lurch at bars and tell them to fend for yourself... And we think back and it's quite funny...
But I've never experienced a bunch of girlfriends abadoning one of their own...They tended to run in packs because us drunk guys can be pigs....And there is safety in numbers.. even if two is the number...
I just hope other kids heed the lessons in this tragedy--and not just the girls, but the boys, too. I think one of the most precious gifts you can give to children is plain old common sense.
