Sheep urine cuts pollution

A British bus company is testing a new secret weapon to reduce polluting emissions - sheep urine.

Stagecoach has fitted a bus in Winchester with a tank containing the waste, reports the Guardian.

The urine is sprayed into exhaust fumes to reduce emissions of harmful nitrous oxides.

Andrew Dyer, managing director of Stagecoach South, said: "It is a novel way of reducing pollution but we believe it will work.

"This is the latest in green technology and we believe it will help make our cities better places to be for the public."

The scheme is backed by Hampshire county council as part of an effort to reduce pollution. The bus carried its first passengers last month.

The urine is collected by the fertiliser industry from farmyard waste and refined into pure urea, which is then sold on to be used in the green engine technology.

Ammonia from the urea reacts with nitrous oxides in the exhaust fumes and converts them to nitrogen gas and water, which is released as steam.

It sounds like a piss-poor solution to me. It may cut down on acid rain, but it will lead to increases in golden showers.

I think I heard somewhere that ancient Roman ladies used horse urine as a beauty treatment...correct me if I'm wrong.

Because ammonia will evaporate when not pressurized and will smell much worse than urine, not to mention it's nasty habit killing people who inhale it.

Urea can be stored as either a liquid or a solid until used.

Hmmm....they must have to do something to it first. Ragamuffin peed on the bedspread and I can tell you it did NOT smell like I sprayed a bottle of perfume in there!

Picture this...

You're standing on a street corner behind a bus. The bus driver steps on the gas pedal full throttle. A large, dark and billowy cloud of diesel soot and sheep urine engulfs you. As you cough, the urine and soot settles into your clothes. Now, you walk into the office to make your presentation reeking of sheep urine. Your office mates giggle behind you as they wonder what barnyard animal you keep company with.
