NYP: BEYOND BOLTON - Another week has gone by, and Democrats continue to block a confirmation vote
New York Post ^ | June 10, 2005 | Editorial

Posted on 06/10/2005 5:18:52 AM PDT by OESY

...Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) has emerged as the Senate's lead obstructionist, saying that Democrats will not invoke cloture... until the administration shares National Security Agency documents that Bolton handled in his position as undersecretary of state.

Dodd declared, "This is now beyond Bolton. It is a question of whether or not the Senate should have a right to information pertaining to a nominee."

Dodd's partisan view seems to have won over Joe Biden, top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee — who had seemed ready, over the weekend, to concede that the nomination would go forward and a confirmation vote held....

What is strange, though, is that Democrats — plus the GOP apostate George "Tears of a Clown" Voinovich of Ohio — seem to believe that it is a political winner to go to the mat in, essentially, defending the "integrity" of the U.N. from a man of John Bolton's stature and talents.

Conversely, the House International Relations Committee on Wednesday OK'd legislation to cut U.S. dues payments in half unless the U.N. passes a wide range of budget, human rights and peacekeeping-mission reforms.

The reforms would oblige the U.N. to have officials sign financial-disclosure forms, overhaul its codes of conduct and establish an independent auditing board. Nations such as Sudan and Cuba would also be barred from serving on human-rights panels.

The House panel's action should come as no surprise.

Oil-for-Food is not the world body's only embarrassment. There are also the recent cases of U.N troops committing rapes while on peacekeeping missions — not to mention sexual harassment charges against high-ranking officials.

It is this record that Dodd & Co. are defending by preventing the president from having a forceful advocate for change and reform representing the America's interests.

John Bolton needs to be confirmed....

Dodd needs to go. Aren't there any strong conservatives up there to challenge this clown?

I love when Rush refers to Dodd as "one half of a waitress sandwich" Referring to the reported incident of Dodd and Teddy Kennedy trying to wedge themselves between a waitress in a tony DC restaurant for fun and sexual harassment.

In the words of a not so great senator, "this guy is a loser"

The Donk insistence on these documents is an obvious poison pill. They know full well that there is no way on God's Green Earth the Administration will ever give them up, and there is no reason they should be expected to. The fight over these documents merely gives them an excuse to oppose the Bolton nomination and obstruct the President.

It is a patently craven strategy that is bankrupt at it's core. They hope the people to not understand this, but the people do. There is no substance to the Democrat Party anymore. Once you get past obstruction, there is nothing left.

I have heard that some rat senators on the security council have already read these. Dodd and the others are just using this as an excuse to block confirmation.

Dodd is too stupid to realize how stupid he really is.

Dodd and Biden are two of the worst Serb-bashers in the Senate and beyond!!!! Bolton is pro-Serbian, and favors the freedom and independence of northern Kosovo and Republika Srpska. All the "reasons" that Dodd and Biden and their fellow "progressives" (i.e., "human rightsers") give to block or not confirm Bolton are a smokescreen for their real, nefarious agenda!!

Voinovich (a Serbian-American) acts like those Serbian politicians in the homeland who grovel at the feet of the EU, NATO, and the kangaroo "court" in the Hague. But Voinovich was not bombed, sanctioned, threatened by the IMF, etc. etc. So he has no excuse whatsoever to do anything but to support the beleaguered Serbian people, including strongly supporting Bolton!!!!

Clarification: by "freedom and independence of northern Kosovo and Republika Srpska", I mean their independence from the muslim-dominated entities that the "human rightser" "international community" has set up to dominate and destroy Serbia. Both of these Serb territories, once liberated, would be expected to join the rest of Serbia.

When Biden, Dodd, and the rest of the smarmy "human rightsers" say "independence", they mean the "independence" of an Albanian/KLA-dominated Kosovo. I say a BIG NO to that!!!!

Thank you for delineating this for some of us who want to understand. I value knowing that Voinovich is of Serbian extraction. That helps to identify what is going on with him. What a shame.

It's a matter of politics, plain and simple. Dodd and Biden are on the losing side in this battle and all they can do is thwart the efforts of a majority that's trying to do something right in confirming Bolton. Hopefully, this'll end soon.

Re #5

Yep. I read somewhere a few days ago (maybe here?) that one of the Dem senators on the Intelligence Committee has publically stated that there is nothing in those documents which would affect the Bolton nomination in any way.

So the delay is bogus. Arm the nuke and open bomb bay doors!
