The only person to apply for the post of police chief in the violent Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo was shot and killed seven hours after taking the job.
Alejandro Dominguez was shot dozens of times late Wednesday evening after leaving work. He's the city's seventh police official to be killed this year.
As he took office on Wednesday afternoon, Dominguez had declared he wasn't afraid of taking the job.
Since January, more than 60 people, including the police officers, have been killed in Nuevo Laredo, which is the busiest border crossing from Mexico into the United States.
City officials have called on Mexican President Vicente Fox to do more to curb violence, saying it may affect trade with the U.S., which has warned its citizens to stay away from the border area.
Two months ago Fox sent in 700 troops and federal agents, but people in the city say it isn't stopping rival drug gangs.
Tijuana human rights activist Victor Clark-Alfaro says the carnage creates fear that paralyses people. The government announces new campaigns to capture organized crime bosses, but no one is ever brought to justice, he says.
The city's previous police chief left the post in May to work on the city council.
Mexican investigative reporter Jesús Blancornelas says some Mexican police are directly involved in drug trafficking.
It's a continental problem, he says, beginning in South America where drugs are produced, transported through Mexico and consumed in the United States and Canada.
He knows how to clean up a town. Still one of the funniest movies ever made.
error.
tj is the busiest border crossing into the usa.
Mexican police tend to be criminals with badges. The whole country sucks.
And I'm not being a bigot. I love Central America and plan to move there before too long, at least for most of the year.
But Mexico is just awful.
mexico is the iraq on our border.
When will the US pull out of Mexico? Clearly our presence there is only feeding the insurgency.
Oh...wait...that's the anti-US template for Iraq. My bad.
Just goes to show, things are tough all over.
Coming to a city near you soon.
Indeed.
Evidentally partially corrupt is not corrupt enough..
I think they mean commercial traffic.
I'll take the job. How much they paying?
