Torture the suspects? What data do we we have that shows torture gets the correct info? People do admit to things to make torture stop? Think of it as a last resort to save a life, Natalee's life for example.
The principle is that persons of interest should not have the right to remain silent in cases like this. They should be compelled to cooperate with an investigation of a missing person.

Well, FOXNews is slow at the switch. I posted the web site and pictures 6 hours ago.

I find that odd as well. Nobody seemed overly concerned that she was off by herself until she didn't show up for the plane. No roommate? No close friend on the trip that she would normally hang out with? No buddy system?

Elaine,
That is the part that is confusing to me, too. The newspaper report is different from what I heard from my daughter.
My daughter ACTUALLY WITNESSED Natalee right outside the entrance to Carlos & Charlie's at around 1:00 a.m. Monday morning. (The paper says she left at 1:30.) My daughter was leaving the bar with two friends, and they were right behind another group. She called to Natalee and asked if she wanted to walk with them (I forget now if my daughter was headed to the hotel or the bar across the street; I think the latter). Natalee cheerfully said no, she would catch up to the group right ahead and walk with them (implying she would be along in a few moments). My daughter had no idea she would not see Natalee again.
This part my daughter didn't see, but was told by her friends: That Natalie passed them on the road a short while later, and that she was a passenger in a taxi with another person. She clearly did not know she was in danger; she leaned out the window and shouted something like "Aruba!!! WOOHOO!" Still having a wonderful time.
I have read and heard other versions since then -- that she was actually seen getting in a car with three men; that she was alone with the guy in his car; that it was a grey car; that it has been impounded by the police. I don't know which is the accurate account.
The kids she passed assumed she was headed back to the hotel complex. No one thought there was any danger; obviously Natalee did not think so either.
That's the only bit I know was witnessed by my daughter or her other friends. But it is agreed that the guy misrepresented himself, and that she got in willingly. Also, I assume everyone in the bar had been drinking, but none of those who passed Natalee had the impression that Natalee was falling-down-drunk or anything like that. I mean to say, probably she had been drinking and wasn't exercising good judgement, but she wasn't bad off enough to cause concern, or someone with the group would have taken her back to the hotel. There were chaperones there, the kids were of legal drinking age, and no one realized there was any danger.
I'll post if I hear any more news, and now that the media is covering this, I'll very much appreciate reading anything that you guys find out.
Thanks, all!

http://www.thewmurchannel.com/news/4587860/detail.html Aruba Police: No Indications Missing Teen Is Not Alive
Three Men Not Arrested Earlier Because Of 'Tactical Reasons'
SNIP Jassen declined to elaborate on the evidence against any of the five men now being held in the case. But she did state that there are so far "no indications (Holloway) is not alive.'
The three young men acknowledged partying with Holloway, 18, of Mountain Brook, Ala., before she went missing last week. According to law enforcement sources, they told police that a man dressed in a security uniform approached her as they dropped her off at her hotel at about 2 a.m.
Two of the suspects, identified as Surinamese brothers Satish and Deepak Kaploe, told police Holloway had been drinking and fell down as she got of the car in front of the hotel.
The source said when the third suspect, Dutch citizen Joran Andreas Petrus Van Der Sloot, tried to help her, she refused, saying, "I can stand on my own."
The Surinamese brothers told police, a black man dressed in a black security uniform and carrying a walkie-talkie went up to Holloway, seemingly to offer his assistance. The suspects then drove off and say they did not see Holloway again.SNIP

The principle is that persons of interest should not have the right to remain silent in cases like this. They should be compelled to cooperate with an investigation of a missing person. Of course, anything they say would be inadmissible in criminal prosecutions against them, so they would very likely be able to walk away free men.

Her family has said that she was a very straight laced person who didn't party much. Also she seems to be a devout christian according to some of her friends. I'm not sure where I heard this but I think that someone said she was saving herself for marriage.
If asked about me in my early 20s, my parents would have said the exact same things. And they would have been oh, so wrong.
C'mon, people . . . parents aren't always the most objective sources of information when it comes to their kids' secrets.

I can somewhat understand O'Rielly and Hannity as they are pretty naive especially when it comes to sexual behavior.
Naive? O'Reilly?
I have one word for you:
Falafel.

A couple nights ago, there was an internet rumor that the 3 guys said they she had sex with all three of them. I pointed out that it was a rumor and that none of the major news sources was reporting that.
That is not a rumor. The 3 men reported they all had consensual sex with her.

To be fair to the chaperones, she is 18. There's precious little they could do to stop her from doing something if she wants.

Out of curiosity I just asked my teenage son what that sign was, and he said, "it's inappropriate Mom", of course I embarrassed him and dropped the subject. Just curious - which sign did you ask him about? I would imagine that most kids have no idea what the various signs mean and just think that they look cool.
A lot of people make the "hook-em horns" sign mostly because they think it looks cool and they've seen other people do it. I remember that some people in Europe thought that Bush was making a satanic gesture when they saw a photo of him doing it.

re: Falafel
I still get a lot of mileage out of making fun of Bill O'R's 'erotic' rap, designed to entice women into bed (or something).
I guess in Bill's world, using a loofa and a falafel interchangably as 'marital aids' is fringy, exotic, and fun. :-)
PS - 'Marital Aids,' that all encompassing word for sexual toys, always baffled me. As if suggesting their use for married couples somehow makes it more legitimate. Amazin!

My first reaction to seeing Joran (is that his name?) in these pictures is that he looks like the type to get frisky when he has a few drinks in him.
My second thought was that assertive women like me probably take on a little pansy mama's boy like that all the time - and 10 bucks says he always backs down.
(I see that type all over the Festival.)

The "shocker" sign that was described a few posts above.
He said the horn sign was "be cool", and the peace sign he did not see a lot.

You guys forget about all the car rental hijackings in Miami years back. A number of folks died.....Oh I agree that Miami has its dangerous spots. I mostly go to South Beach and I feel very safe there. I don't feel quite as safe as I do in Aruba, but nothing too bad. I've walked down Ocean, Collins and Washington at 4:00 AM and it wasn't too bad as the streets were still full of people and most of the restaurants still open.
I don't really feel that Miami is a place for families though. It is a little to racy for most.
