WASHINGTON - In a meeting with members of Congress, President Bush said he needs to do a better job explaining his position on immigration changes, House Majority Leader Tom Delay said Wednesday.

"He admitted he hasn't done a very good job in being clear to the American people where he's coming from, and he's going to try to do better," said Delay, who attended the White House session where the president discussed his legislative agenda.

"Bush will reluctantly return to the business of government, after his happy interlude of focus on Social Security, stem cells, and Terry Shiavo."

Those aren't the business of government?

There's this little factoid about how well the President's policies are working buried in this story in Tuesday's Fort Worth Star-Telegram:
Meanwhile, with the Homeland Security Department focused on terrorism threats, it has virtually stopped policing the workplace for run-of-the-mill work violations. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested only 450 illegal immigrants in the workplace in 2003, down from 14,000 in 1998.

That way, you aren't importing lower wages into the US, driving down the prevailing wage within our borders.

Agreed?

It might be nice... but no, right now I'm interested in keeping Al Queda out of the country. I think we can worry about wage issues once we're comfortable keeping bombers out as much as we can.

The LAST amnesty--remember, the one that was supposed to be the last amnesty ever--registration worked well. Because if you can get something for nothing, you'll give it a shot, and these illegals ain't stupid, they'll take what they can get. You can bet that there are folks who are establishing bona fides under the rules of Bush's proposal already from overseas to try and get things rolling just in case.

It just won't solve the problem, which is that more illegals will come to fill their shoes. And we still won't do diddly to stop them with the NEW laws...you know, the ones taking the place of the old laws that were supposed to stop illegals after the LAST "last amnesty ever."

The problem includes people coming here as common criminals to prey on our citizens with the huge attendant costs. The problem includes those coming here to suck off the largess of the American taxpayer with its significant impact on American families. The problem includes our loyal citizenry being diluted by those who owe no allegiance to our country or its founding principals. The problem is no less than the potential for the destruction of of our country, as we know it, and our cherished way of life

Your problems sounds like liberalism, only you want to blame the person who comes here to clean toilets and make an honest living, and not the liberal system, i.e welfare, the liberally dominated school system, etc.etc.

BTW, it's to bad that tancredo wasn't squawking about deporting this guy.

The ex-con father of a little girl who was beaten and stabbed to death with her best friend on Mother's Day is under arrest and will be charged with first-degree murder. Jerry Hobbs (search), who has an extensive criminal history and was released from a Texas jail just last month, stabbed his daughter, 8-year-old Laura Hobbs (search), and her 9-year-old schoolmate, Krystal Tobias (search), repeatedly in the neck, Illinois state attorney Mike Waller said Tuesday.

I think most of those 450 were arrested while on 'Federal' projects, working on courthouse buildings, etc.

Bayourod's lie of the day:

It isn't President Bush who is adjusting, it's the rest of the nation that is coming around to recognizing the need for a guest worker program, something he called for six years ago and has consistently repeated.

I have unforutnuately met a few illegals in my day. They do not want to be legal if it means paying taxes like all of us and not being able to work for cash. They want to work to send the money home while taking whatever they can suck dry while here on the taxpayers dime. Its that simple.

If they aren't a problem, maybe we should come up with a legal way for them to be here, so we can concentrate on the ones that *are* a problem. What think?

Do you support his guest worker plan?

Why accomodate people who do not want to be legal in the first place???? Why don't THEY accomodate us and come here legally?

You can't import Americans. Americans earn that status, as our forefathers did, by effort and dedication to the principals of our founding fathers.

How about video cameras set up and a huge big screen tv at all the police and immigration stations to watch whoever comes across?

Trust is more valid at the local level. Your Rep in congress must know about the strain that is being put on local services in his area. Too much faith is going to the federal executive machine. Those guys don't really care. The school board is in a better position to evaulate.

From your article

NEW YORK — An overwhelming majority of Americans think illegal immigration (search) is a very or somewhat serious problem for the country today, and over two-thirds favor using the United States military to stop illegal immigrants from entering the country, according to the latest FOX News Poll. Almost equal numbers say their concern about illegal immigration is based on homeland security and terrorism as say their concern is about jobs and the economy.

The poll finds 91 percent think the illegal or undocumented immigration situation in the United States today is a "very" serious (63 percent) or "somewhat" serious (28 percent) problem. Only 5 percent think the problem is "not very" serious and 2 percent "not at all" serious.

Yep...At least 80%...

And you're in the 2% range...But 1.5% of you guys are illegal aliens...

Interviews have all kinds of stupid discrimination regs involved. Unless you tell EVERYONE they must already have legal authorization to work in the U.S. in the ad, or interview, you can't even mention it before you've given them the offer. But your HR folks have to screen their status before hiring can take place. And IRCA made it illegal for employers to knowingly hire persons who are not authorized to work in the United States. An employer who knowingly hires an undocumented worker and/or fails to verify an employees' identity and work eligibility may be liable for criminal sanctions...and this is the law we don't enforce. We do not let whatever the INS equivalent is these days go after employers to investigate. The feds put a stop to that pretty quick when the big illegal hiring outfits like the meat packers bitched to Congress.

So why should I buy any new anti-illegal laws would be enforced when these aren't?
