A 6-year-old girl darted into traffic to save a turtle and was killed when she was hit by a car, officials said.
Emily Kent (search) was riding with her mother Sunday when they spotted the turtle trying to cross busy U.S. 41.
Geraldine Kent pulled over so they could help, and Emily jumped out as her mother screamed at her to wait, friends said. The first-grader was struck by a car and died of her injuries. No charges had been filed.

Ping. Story sounds familiar, doesn't it?
Very sad. Interestingly enough, I just saw a homeless woman near my local coffeeshop cuddling a live turtle as if it were a baby. Strange.
Lord, that poor mother. She must be just reeling with the shock and the "if only I had not done this or that," or "if only I'd grabbed her hand."
The turtles and snakes are all moving. It's mating time. The black snakes at my house are tripping over each other (and startling me) trying to "hook up".
Try not to hit them, but don't do something this stupid.
Heart in the right place, but incredibly poor judgement (by the parents). Prayers for the family (as an innocent, her soul will be just fine!).
My two year old tried to pull her hand out of mine and run onto the street the other day and I just shiver thinking about it.

Nothing will make a parent's heart stop like seeing a young one dart out into the street. It's frightening how fast they can move when they set their minds to something.
Prayers for the little girl's soul, the suffering family, and the driver who must be wracked with guilt.
Owl_Eagle(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
My children are taught on a regular basis that one does not even swerve sharply for some animal in the road. Such maneuvers can cause loss of control of the vehicle killing everyone in the car. Better to let the animal die. Be careful what you believe, it may very well cost you your life and it can certainly cost you your soul.
God forbid someone should actually have stopped or slowed down for a 6 year old in the roadway on "busy US 41" or any other highway or street for that matter.
Oh please. How do you know it was even possible for the driver to have avoided the accident? When someone runs into the street suddenly there's not much to be done.
My wife wants to swerve the car to avoid turtles. Fine if there is no oncoming traffic and potentially deadly in traffic. I keep telling her, better off hittig a turtle than an oncoming car or a tree.
Your comment seems pretty cold-blooded to me. To blame the mother for "abject training" is appalling.
I have a six year old daughter who loves animals, a love that I actively encourage. (She has a cat and a ball python).
All the training in the world will not necessarily stop a child who impulsively runs out to save an animal. And believe me, safety has been a major theme in my daughter's training since she could walk.
Six year olds have a LONG way to go in terms of developing impulse control (although they're better at it than 4-year-olds).
Although I hope I have trained my daughter well, I can imagine at least a remote possibility that she might be capable of acting as this unfortunata child did in a similar situation. I will make sure to add this tragic story to her training as an object lesson.
But, with all due respect, I find your comments to be heartless and self-righteous.
I can opnly imagine how this mother is racked with pain, grief and remorse. I pray for her and her daughter.
This was a tragic childhood accident, and to blame the mother in this case is preposterous.
Sad, but understandable. When very young, I once asked my Dad to stop so I move a turtle out of the road. Difference is that I didn't rush into the road to get it...
well sometimes hitting large animals could be equally as dangerous, hitting a moose or large male deer could total your car but yes swerving to miss the moose or deer is likely a more dangrous move and likely counter productive
my father had a brand new car, a GT Vega, remember them? and a moose ran out on QEW, near Fort Erie, he had the opportunity to switch lanes to try and avoid it, but the moose moved into the next lane also and crunch.......did major major damage to the front end of the car....
A few years ago I saw a toddler 'get loose' and head for the street. As I went to grab her my mind did a fast forward to accusations of child molestation. I stopped her with my arm, my open hand extended past her so her mother could see. It worked. But what if she had writhed and gotten around me...?
Not from Florida, are 'ya? In this state, you could be dying of a seizure in the middle of the road and people would be blowing their horns for you to get out their way.
I promise you that if you dart into busy US41 in Cobb County Georgia, you better give your heart to G_d. There would be nothing a driver could do.
