MIAMI - Taxi! Take us to the United States, don't spare the gas and mind the, er, waves. A group of 13 Cubans set sail for the United States in a vintage blue taxicab converted into an unwieldy vessel, Miami television station NBC 6 reported.
But the makeshift boat, with a prow jutting out of the front and a taxi sign on the roof, was intercepted on Tuesday evening by the U.S. Coast Guard about 20 miles off Key West on the southern tip of Florida.

Yes it is. This may seem like shade tree mechanic stuff to some, but some serious thought went into these vessels. And is it not High Art to fashion such conveyances for the purpose of freedom? I think so. I think that these welders and mechanics deserve, in absentia, Presidential Medals of Freedom.
In each of the cases above, the refugees were handed back to the real gulag that is Communist Cuba. Eventually, a couple and child that were on these fantastic creations did make it into the US. I wish we could have just accepted them in the first place and got them a spot in a top engineering school.
Or they should give lessons to Jesse James on Monster Garage.
My wife teaches at a high school with a Gal from Cuba. According to this Gal, Castro is the worst thing since moldy bread and his brother is worse. Those Barbra Walters interviews with Castro, make her sick to her stomach. The left leaning media in this country should all be rounded up and deported to Cuba, but forced to sail there in a floating car that they are forced to build.
Down here in Tampa, there are a lot of Cubans, some of whom I've known a long time. My son-in-law is Cuban and his folks HATE Castro, like all the other Cubans do. Too bad Castro won't go ahead and croak. He's ruined that country.
Maybe next time they can swipe a cannon from the old fort in Havana, mount it to the roof and hold the Coasties at bay long enough to make landfall.
"He's ruined that country."
Once he and communism are gone from the island, tourism is going to flourish. Travelling back in time has appeal for a lot of people.
Even better, maybe they will both die in some kind of gruesome accident together.
Or that the coasties report back that the radar blip turned out to be a flock of sea birds, nothing found, returning to base. But then they would catch holy heck from the MSM when the craft landed undetected. I gotta think the coasties are conflicted when ordered to destroy such magnificent freedom floats.
"tourism is going to flourish"
I've heard it used to be a beautiful country, and a tourist's dream to visit. What a shame, what's happened to it.
Heh, this is the second discussion about this I've found on this forum. I was so inspired by the creativity and persistence of these Cuban guys that I put up http://www.floatingcubans.com/ to tell their story.
Just for the record, many left-leaners (like me) think the Castro regieme is repressive and worthy of overthrow. I'd love to see democracy flourish around the world. Don't equate liberals with despots! I'd also love to visit Cuba someday--I hear it's beautiful.
Here's the post I made on the other discussion if anybody is curious: http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1418879/posts#48
That is a great Web site.
We lost Elian to the dictator Fidel, but at least Angel Luis Grass and his parents get to stay (finally). I hope things work out for the taxi group as well.
