What Will Future Generations Say?
New Republic ^ | 6/7/2005 | Sowell

During World War II, German soldiers who were captured not wearing the uniform of their own army were simply lined up against a wall and shot dead by American troops.

This was not a scandal. Far from being covered up by the military, movies were taken of the executions and have since been shown on the History Channel. We understood then that the Geneva Convention protected people who obeyed the Geneva Convention, not those who didn't -- as terrorists today certainly do not.

What will future generations say if we continue to allow unabated socialism leading to bankruptcy? What will future generations say if we continue to allow judicial terrorists to usurp the Constitution? What will future generations say if pervasion masquerading as freedom is allowed to be pushed by our schools?

Answer: They won't say much as they will be slaves to a tyrannical government, whether ours or imposed from abroad.

How right you are. It is frightening how fast things are going these days - I truly wonder if there is even a chance to regain what we have lost. I fear for my grandson.

I like the attitude. I've had a bad one lately. Good comeback.

Dr. Sowell once again hits the issue square. Will be posting this editorial on a message board frequented by self-described 'Eurowussies' -- to annoy them.

It took Pearl Harbor to force the US into WWII. 9/11 simply wasn't horrible enough for us to abandon PC thinking, especially for those on the west coast. Were Seattle or LA to go up in smoke with hundreds of thousands dead, kneejerk PC mindset would die in a minute. Or maybe all it will take is a terrorist attack on a west coast school.(Yesterday they were talking about a scientific paper detailing how to poison the nation's milk supply). If it happens right under your nose and especially to children, it's hard to ignore.

Dr. Sowell is in the business of speaking the simple truth, in plain English which anyone can understand. I, too, have seen the tapes of American executions of Germans for attacks AFTER the end of WW II. I, too, have written about the non-application of the Geneva Conventions to terrorists then, as to terrorists today.

Sowell's columns reach a larger audience than any of us here on FreeRepublic. Because he is so thoughtful, so well prepared, there is even a possibility that his columns could influence some members of the MSM. We can hope, can't we?

It isn't about PC thinking; it's about socialism. Socialism--from both the left and the right--is what we get when people respond to a perceived threat. For the left, it may be poverty, so they implement programs that expand the size and scope of government to combat that threat. For the right, it may be terrorism, and government growth is justified as a means of warding off that threat.

There's a reason why many of us refer to this as the welfare/warfare state. The two go hand-in-hand. They may be exploited by "liberals" and "conservatives" for different reasons, but both lead inevitably to an expansion of government.

You are wrong dear friend. It is about both. One is the fuse and the other is the match that ignites it. Alone, they are can only nip at our heels and are easier to fight. Together, they are the destroyer of nations.

I hate to say it, but our own effectiveness at taking the war to the terrorists and establishing Iraq as the "front" is what makes the liberal fifth-columnists feel so secure to bash the government. I recall in the weeks after 9/11, there was a very unified public mind, primarily because the libs were ducking for cover and afraid to open their mouths for fear of getting mobbed by patriotic citizens.

The fact that we remain so secure at home has allowed them to crawl out of their holes and sow their seeds of dissension and sedition again. A sense of passive security breeds this cancer. American patriots seem to come alive when danger challenges them.

Somehow, there has to be a way to get the rank and file Americans to understand that the liberals are an enemy more insidious, persistent, and dangerous that al-Qaeda or the Taliban.

No truer words were ever spoken. We are slow to rile, but when we are, they'd better start ducking.

The liberals are so moronic, they can't see that the very rights that give them leeway to undermine what we stand for as a country...will be the first liberty lost.

For the women in this country,(they know who they are) they should hang their heads in shame for not speaking out against a religion that would see them in servitude. I, as a woman, would choose death over slavery.

IN WW II, Germans were Krauts, Japanese were Japs or Nips.

In this war, Terrorists are Insurgents. Quite a difference.

I'm not convinced there will be "future generations".

One reason is that some damage cannot be undone.

Another is from a Christian perspective ... so MANY events are indicative of what has been prophesied. I'm guessing that we are beyond the point of no return.

"But what of future generations, after international terrorists get nuclear weapons? And what will our descendants think of us -- will they ever forgive us -- for leaving them in such a desperate situation because we were paralyzed by a desire to placate "world opinion"?"

Or they there are future generations their hearts could become even MORE hardened to common sense. An analogy might be ... those that advocate socialism, Demoncrats ... and RHINO'S just haven't found the RIGHT way to go about it. Pride and ego often blind people.
