Carter Calls on U.S. to Shut Down Gitmo

ATLANTA - Former President Carter on Tuesday called for the United States to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison to demonstrate its commitment to human rights.

"The U.S. continues to suffer terrible embarrassment and a blow to our reputation ... because of reports concerning abuses of prisoners in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo," Carter said after a two-day human rights conference at his Atlanta center.

Such reports have surfaced despite President Bush's "bold reminder that America is determined to promote freedom and democracy around the world," Carter said.

About 540 detainees are being held at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Some have been there more than three years without being charged with a crime. Most were captured on the battlefields of Afghanistan in 2001 and 2002 and were sent to Guantanamo Bay in hope of extracting useful intelligence about the al-Qaida terrorist network.

Carter said the United States needs to make sure no detainees are held incommunicado and that all are told the charges against them.

Despite his criticism of Guantanamo Bay, Carter said Amnesty International should not have called the prison "the gulag of our time" in a report last month. President Bush has termed the report by the human-rights group "absurd."

Carter said the alleged abuses at Guantanamo Bay could never compare with the forced labor camps operated by the former Soviet Union.

Thank God that we did not have to face a major fight with Carter in the White House

I think the flames of radical Islam were ignited because of Carter's Iran policy. He basically pulled the US support out from under the Shah allowing him to fall and radical Islam to gain control of their first country in the middle east.

The Shah was not perfect, but what he gave Iran instead has consrquences world wide today. He should be indicted for crimes against humanity.

That pacifist liberal idiot would have been out in front waving a white flag.

He almost did it with Iran.

He certainly managed to botch it up pretty badly.

And then to make up for it, he gave away the Panama Canal.

Carter gave back the Panama Canal. The Chinese control it now.

He deposed the Shah and turned the country over to the mad Ayatollah's.

He supported Arafat's murderous crusade against Israel.

Carter worked behind the scenes imploring the Arab countries to NOT back the first President Bush in the first Gulf War.

Carter did so much damage we will be paying for his anti American hatred for decades more.

The takeover of human/civil rights and environmental grassroots movements by liberals/socialists is now complete. Jimmy is an embarassment; he should shut up before people realize that he is senile.

I think President Bush should appoint Jimmy as "ambassador to Gitmo". That way he can monitor the situation up close and personal.

He should be decorating a tree, or sharing a cell with Clinton. The left continues to provide us WITH TRAITORS --- and the idiots that put them in the Oval Office are equally guilty.

If Ronald Reagan had not defeated Carter, there would be no America.

Carter hated America before he was president, as president and after he left DC.

Well, God already shut his brain down long ago...obviously.

He's got a lot to answer for, which is why he's not kicked the bucket yet. Fear is keeping him alive, and his mouth running.

The bad guys always seem to live a long time...Carter, Castro, Osama, etc.

Ok, Mr. Carter, we will send those prisons to your town and you take care of them. That way you will not have to travel the world to advise how you would handle things.
