In preparation for the G-8 meeting in Scotland, President Bush received British PM Tony Blair at the White House, then held a press conference with him in which, among other things, they pledged hundreds of millions of dollars in more aid to Africa, including famine relief. Both emphasized the rewards that go to African nations that embrace true democracy. Both were asked about the "Downing Street Memo;" each strongly denied the substance of it, which I will not dignify with repetition here. Press here for press conference text.
Senate Democrats failed in their efforts to continue the stall against Justice Janice Brown's Appeals Court nomination being voted on, despite Senator Schumer asking the Senate, from the floor, if Justice Brown, a Southern sharecropper's daughter, wants to be the "Grand Exalted Ruler." Senator Jeff Sessions took offense to Schumer likening Justice Brown's aspirations to those of the hierarchy of the Ku Klux Klan. Schumer denied that he invoked such a thing.

QUOTE: "Together our two nations [USA and Britain] worked to liberate Europe from fascism; together we defended freedom during the Cold War. Today we're standing together again to fight the war on terror, to secure democracy and freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan and the broader Middle East, and to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction. As we face the challenges and opportunities of a new century, our alliance is stronger than ever."
President Bush on Monday said, "The artists we celebrate this month use music to lift the human spirit. Black music in America began with the work songs and spirituals of people held in slavery. Their songs bore witness to cruelty and earthly injustice. And yet in them we hear the voice of faith lifted up to God. That music could have come only from the unique experience of African Americans, yet it speaks a language that all Americans understand."
