I've been thinking that too .. that it was probably a panic situation more than a planned event.

I've been to Aruba a few times and I wouldn't say it comes close to being a hellhole.There are filthy people in every city or town all over the world who prey on young naive girls.A young girl who leaves a bar late at night with total strangers would be risking her life in just about any country.
