Debs was a socialist when socialists weren't afraid to admit to it. The canard about wars being fought by the Workers in order to enrich the Rulers is just basic 19th century/early 20th century Marxism.
The Democrats are stuck in a time warp.

Sound familiar?

Recently Bill Maher remarked during his HBO show that the military recruits the dregs of society.
If this were true, Maher would be a veteran!!!!

Recently Bill Maher remarked during his HBO show that the military recruits the dregs of society. So does this make John Kerry a dreg of high society?
Maher, of course, is the creme de la creme.

This article plays with statistics to be misleading. It's dishonest and you'd think Free Republic would have higher standards.
The article says:
"Beinart also states that, "Minorities, who in 1973 comprised 23 percent of new enlistees, today comprise 37 percent." Yet according to the Department of Defense, " In the enlisted force, African Americans were overrepresented among
active duty
(20 percent) relative to the 18-24 year-old civilian population (14 percent).
Twenty percent is about half of the percentage Beinart cites."
Last I checked, there were several other groups called minorities besides African Americans. So Beinart's numbers do NOT conflict with the Defense Department data cited in the article to disprove Beinart.

It is a lie that those who are in the military and those who are casualties are mostly poor and minorities. It is a lie, which can be traced to at least 1918.WBTS: "Rich man's war and poor man's fight." Heard on both sides. Had a good deal of truth to it at the time, too.

The mantra of the poor boy fighting the rich man's war was stated during Viet Nam. It was said during Korea. It was said World War II. In fact, the founder of the Socialist Party of America, Eugene Debs, made this claim during World War I. Don't give credit to Eugene Debs. "Rich man's war, poor man's fight!" was a rallying cry during the New York City draft riots of 1863, when it was actually true: the wealthy could avoid the draft by paying a bounty. In the Confederacy, men who owned 20 or more slaves were exempt from service.
