I'm all for voting principle over expedience when there are no other options, but for those Freepers who voted for Lonegan over Bret, well, now we get Forrester v. Corzine, neither of whom deserves a conservative's vote. Bret Schundler is a true conservative who didn't get the support of the horrendous NJ Republican Party machine in 2001, but he honed his message for NJ, deemphasizing social issues that the New York-Philly-New Jersey liberal media spin to scare the sheeple, and instead focusing on the property tax issue. Based on his platform, his experience in Jersey City, his personal telegenics and articulate manner of presentation, Bret Schunlder had the best chance of winning, and then actually making a difference, for conservative values in New Jersey.
Lonegan and those who voted for him killed that possibility, based on--well, what precisely? Lonegan's caveman demeanor and attitude help perpetuate the stereotype that political conservatives are inarticulate, mean-spirited, and just plain stupid. What a disaster, what a set back, for NJ conservatives.
As for the conspiracy nuts who advanced the odious arguments here on FR that Bret was a "terrorist supporter" essentially because there are Muslims in Jersey City, shame on you. I doubt that the arguments persuaded anybody to vote against Bret since they were so asinine, but it showed how many purported conservatives are Jacobin leftists at heart.
Forrester or Corzine? George Wallace said there ain't a dime's worth a difference between the Republicans and the Democrats, and here in NJ, how true that is. I see no reason at all to vote for Forrester, since RINO thieves do more damage to conservative values than the worst liberal Democrat. Christie Whitman, Donnie Di, Tom Kean, Doug Forrester-- pro-abort, anti-gun, high taxing gaggle of lefties--a pox on them all.
Weep for us in the Garden State, all you Freepers!
Forrester "winning" with 36% proves that the lack of a run-off in non-Southern primaries benefits RINOs at the expense of conservatives. The same thing has happened in a gazillion other GOP primaries, even in heavily conservative districts, in which the lone RINO candidate manages to sneak by a multi-candidate field with 30% or so. We are in danger of the same thing happening in Ohio's 2nd CD, the most conservative and Republican in the state, in which RINO Pat DeWine (the even more liberal son of treasonous Senator Mike DeWine, who made the deal with the Democrats not to enforce the constitutional option on the judicial filibusters) is running against 3 well known conservatives and several lesser-known conservatives; if Pat DeWine wins with 30% or so, it would be obvious that he would have been shellacked in a run-off against whichever conservative finished second, but Ohio's lack of a primary would result in a RINO representing a district that gave President Bush over 62% in each of 2000 and 2004. I don't know how many similar wake-up calls conservatives will have before they finally figure out that only with run-offs when a primary does not yield a 50% winner (or perhaps, such as in North Carolina, a run-off only when the primary winner gets below 40%) will we be able to ensure that our party's nominee is truly a candidate who is supported by a majority of Republicans.

Great point on the runoff. Dang, I never thought of that. Me a silly yankee.
thats what I was going for too...He ran this time to get State-wide Name Recognition. It looks like Menendez will run for the crats. And you always get the unknowns from small towns too.
Your #201 is right on. You've articulate better than I ever could.
Lonegan's supporters have cut of their noses to spite their faces. Trite comment, but all their conservative talk was empty. I can be loyal to a fault, at times, but when the picture was so clear --as this one was-- you have to be practical.
I will push the "R" lever, but as I said earlier, it will be with my middle finger.

VERY well said.
