The point is that the media completely ignored the corruption on the part of the Democrats, especially today in their retrospectives. Had Watergate pulled down a Dem president, every report on it on ABCBSNBCNN would have a disclaimer in the 2nd sentence about how "Of course previous Republican administrations had engaged in the same illegal activity." It isn't about excusing Nixon, but further exposing the media 'coverups'. There is such a thing as 'lying by ommission'.
Let's face it, Nixon made history primarily because he is the only president forced to quit without finishing his term. Yes, the media helped bring him down. Years from now, Clinton will be remembered primarily as one of only two (so far) presidents to be impeached.
But the media also helped bring down Johnson. LBJ didn't quit during his term but he didn't run for re-election, and one of the primary reasons for that was the media stories that were destroying the country's faith in him. And rightly so. And in the past 37 years book after book and article after article (even by admirers) have exhaustively detailed how he stole elections in Texas and double crossed everybody.
