DENVER - Former CBS anchor man Dan Rather choked up several times as he addressed the Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) convention.
More than 800 investigative reporters, editors and producers from around the world listened to the keynote address Saturday afternoon.
"I stand before you as a reporter who got lucky," Rather said.
But he also said he is a reporter "with scars and still open wounds, some of them self inflicted" - an apparent reference to the National Guard document scandal that led to his premature departure from the anchor chair at the CBS Evening News.
Rather answered questions about the scandal, written by the investigative journalists in the audience. Although he didn't get into too much detail about what happened, he did say the scandal taught him to "trust the judgment of the American people."
Rather was asked if it was fair that his producer, Mary Mapes, was fired following an investigation into the story while he was able to continue his career at CBS.
"What I think about it doesn't matter," Rather said.
Rather appeared emotional several times during his speech - including once when he asked those gathered for 10 seconds of silence to honor the men and women serving in the military. He choked up again while telling the investigative journalists gathered: "Your country needs your work right now - now more than ever."
Rather started as anchor of the CBS Evening News in 1981. Before that, he served as the CBS White House correspondent, covered Vietnam and was the first reporter to report the death of President John F. Kennedy. He continues to work as a correspondent for CBS's 60 Minutes.
I'd like to choke....never mind.
I know what you mean.
I'll say it. I would like to choke him for all the lies.
Rather got all choked up b/c he knows he is a washed-up, "has been" who will forever be known as the reporter who used false documents to try to bring down President Bush and failed.
Just as long as the world knows he tried to use phony documents to create a phony story, I'm jazzed. **SNIFF**
Is that all that they are worth? Ten seconds??? You cheap bastard.
Well, time's money and you gotta keep the customers happy when they've forked over $50,000 per gig to get you to lie to them.
"Is that all that they are worth? Ten seconds??? You cheap bastard"
He knew that asking for the culturally established "one minute of silence" would be considered much too burdensome by most of his audience, those paragons of the cultural left....
Dan Rather - The Grand Politically Biased Liar of All Time. Journalist, my ass.
Really? Not that I watch, but from what I understand, Rather seems to be missing in action ... this seems to be a 'in name only' gig.
"Your country needs your work right now - now more than ever."
This, from the man who once offered to knock Abraham Zapruder to the ground and steal his movie film for a CBS scoop.
Heck. I thought you meant they hung him.
"I stand before you as a reporter who got lucky," Rather said.
No kidding. Dan Rather has never been held accountable for his crimes.
The short answer is they're ruled by their emotions. Otherwise, how could they continue to peddle the Utopian States of America?
Have they finally come to their senses and are mourning the fact they've been wrong all their life?
Short answer, no ;^)
Damn, it's sickening, embarrassing and repulsive to see these phony bastards's tears -- for THEMSELVES...
Preach it brother!
FGS
Courage; Dan, courage......
Was this the National Liars Anonymous Convention he addressed?
