Sikh youth hair attack 'victim' admits hoax
CTV.ca News Staff
A Sikh youth in B.C. has apologized for inventing a story of being set upon by a group of white men who cut his hair.
The 17-year-old from Richmond, a Vancouver suburb, admitted to police he made up the story.
Police had already been suspicious, because the attack, which had been alleged to have occurred in broad daylight on May 26, had generated no tips from the public.
"He had fabricated the entire incident," RCMP Cpl. Peter Thiessen told reporters Saturday.
"The injuries that we observed on him that required medical attention were self-inflicted," he said.
The youth had claimed the five men stopped their basketball game, pulled off his turban and cut his long hair with a utility knife. Hair is considered sacred by Sikhs.
But the youth merely wanted to cut his hair but was afraid to deal with his parents.

When I was 17, I wanted long hair, but I couldn't come up with a story that some punks somehow all of of sudden made my hair grow.
Well, this is a first time a teenager has had to lie to his parents in order to get a normal haircut.
Usually, things are all the other way.
I kind of feel bad for the kid. It sounds like he wanted to fit in, Wdesternize. His parents wouldn't let him take off the turban. So he probably made up a story which just got him in deeper since the authorities got involved. And I guess the media just jumped in.
Am I seeing sympathy for Tawana Brawley here?
Why are you posting something from 2005? What's the agenda? Speak up...your 15 minutes start now....
When my sons wanted to let their hair grow, I never hassled them about it. I thought just in case they inherited the baldness gene from my father, let them enjoy their hair while they have it.
Come on man...why did you post a stroy from May, 2005? You responded in another thread about a Sikh youth in UK being attacked with this story...why this story and why now?
He posted it in 2005.
Ahh, give the guy a break! He just doesn’t know how to spell “BTTT”!
(My excuse: I was searching out stories of “hate crimes” hoaxes, to link into a current post about the current rash of nooses being ‘found’.)
