Iran: One Step Closer for the Military

The Iranian military has taken another step forward to taking over the helms of the country. Circles that control the National Iranian Radio and TV and the three major national newspapers, plus the seventy two individuals who sit in the Parliament (Majlis) as people’s representatives now have put the supervision and monitoring of the electoral process on their agenda in order to clear the way for the victory of one of their four military candidates to the president’s house.

Gholam Hossein Elham, the spokesman for the Guardians Council formally announced that the Baseej, the young volunteers who are controlled by the military and paramilitary leadership, would participate in the supervision and oversight of the presidential elections, thus bringing the military into the official oversight and control of the presidential elections.

Mosavi Lari, the Minister of the Interior, who is constitutionally charged with monitoring the execution of the elections protested the Baseej’s entry into this sphere In a letter to the Guardians Council he stressed the dangers of such a decision. Another former official protested that unfortunately even the Majlis has between 60 to 70 Parliamentary deputies with military connections and backgrounds who hid such ties and affiliations when they submitted their applications to run for the Parliament.

Mostafa Tajzadeh, a prominent reformer and democracy movement leader warned that military candidates will be supported by the warring circles in the US as this will provide the necessary US public opinion support for US harmful policies towards Iran. The election of a military president will make easier for the US to point the finger at Iran’s nuclear ambitions and advocate taking the case to the UN Security Council for sanctions and other actions.

Uh, forgot to say that it is really hard to expect the Mullahs leave power when they keep receiving aids and supports from EU and US
