Apple makes switch to Intel chips

Apple has confirmed that it is dropping IBM chips from its Mac computers in favour of those made by Intel.

The first Apple computers with the Intel chips onboard will be on the market by this time next year.

"We think Intel's technology will help us create the best personal computers for the next 10 years," Steve Jobs, the head of Apple, said.

The move is being seen as a big gamble for Apple strategy, and a boost to Intel at the expense of IBM.

It ends a decade-long relationship between Apple and IBM, which have recently wrangled over supply problems.

Chipping in

The agreement means Apple is joining the ranks of other computer makers which use microprocessors built on the x86 architecture.

The Mac Mini is expected to be the first Apple computer to use Intel chips, with the entire product line switching by the end of 2007.

The techie rumor mill here in Silcon Valley has it that Apple decision to ride the Intel horse, is in large part, due to the incorporation of "download security" functions being incorporated into new generation Pentium (or some other name) products. Apple's business has grown very sharply due to the iPod, music and soon to be video capabilities, not by selling more computers. They want to protect that upside by protecting the download process which will be strategically important to their continued success.

Did that I see what you mean ... I always put the title in ... The admins seem to be letting it go if it is from a different source. And there is some different info in the articles. Not so important on a PC/MAC story compared to a terrorist capture....

A PC in a really stylish box with an operating system that doesn't crash and browser and mail system that isn't full of security holes a hacker could put a whole suite of malware through.

The point of Macs is mostly the OS--which got better when it became a species of UNIX with a really user-friendly GUI on top of it.

I've got Linux (with the KDE GUI) on an Intel box at work, and Mac OS X (Panther) at home. Both are stable beyond the wildest dreams of Windows users, but the GUI with OS X is better.

I'm wondering whether Jobs decided that with the new income stream from the iPod and iTunes, it was time to go head to head with Microsoft on the software side. Once OS X is recompiled for Intel chips, it should be possible to run it on PC's, and unlike the Linux GUI's it is ready for prime-time.

It may or may not be 'dead', depending upon the distro or uzer, but even though I have been trying to find a replacement for the current version of 'Doze I am running, nothing out there is 'Ready For The Desktop'. And I LIKE Linux.

Then again I liked Syquest, and look where they are now.

...although perhaps I might try specializing in repairing them. Hmmm. I need to reflect upon that for a bit. It might be nice to get My SparQ unit functional again...
