Moynihan might have felt he owed that to the Clintons for their implementing welfare reform, of which he was the major earliest advocator.
He didn't need to please anyone, Dem or Repub, and in fact at the UN he delighted in shoving it in the faces of the UNcrats.
But as someone who cared deeply about putting great ideas into practice, he wanted to keep alive the opportunity to influence. Arrogant, he yet had the saving grace to respect the ability of Americans to make their own way in life.
We should esteem that quality in our political leaders even when they're in the other party, or aren't that likeable.
