NEW YORK -- The actor Russell Crowe was arrested Monday morning for allegedly throwing a telephone at an employee of the Manhattan hotel where he was staying, police said.

Crowe, 41, allegedly threw the phone at the Mercer Hotel employee, striking him in the face, during an argument at around 4:20 a.m., said police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wysokowski.

The Australian movie star was arrested and charged by police with second degree assault, Wysokowski said.

Crowe was expected to appear in Manhattan Criminal Court later on Monday.

An employee who answered the phone at the Mercer Hotel in SoHo said he was unaware of the incident.

Crowe won the Academy Award for best actor for "Gladiator" in 2001.

Talent and maturity don't often come in the same package.

If you are having someone throw a phone at a hotel employee - wait for Russell Crowe, don't settle for Colin Farrell.

Seems so. Too bad. My first husband had trouble with beer, too. It killed him.

I think it has that effect, if one is not careful.

His last film, "The Missing," may not have done well at the box office. However, "A Beautiful Mind" made $170 million at the box office and "The Grinch" made $260 million. Not bad for his last 3 films. The 6 movies he directed in the last 10 years averaged $131,760,143. I'd say that would buy a lot of Milwaukee's Best.

Didn't he make The Alamo?

In this article they failed to say, "Crowe, 41, who plays a boxer in his latest film "Cinderella Man..." Cynical?

And here I was considering seeing his movie ...

Maybe I'll go see Revenge of the Sith (again) instead

I think Russel Crowe and I are soul mates.

Too bad I am this short hispanic lady from New York and not a tall, light blonde angel like his wife....

In any event, I am a fireball like he is and I also get angry at people who are idiots behind counters, at the cash register, etc. I am also an intense performer/entertainer so maybe my intensity flows over where my patience runs thin as does his.

I can guarantee that the clerk was one of two categories of types in Manhattan. I will get banned if I say what I am really thinking so leave it to your imagination. I would get pissed too if they are the types I am thinking about.

Nevertheless, he's got to stop at physical stuff or there will be more handcuffs. Then a long, drawn-out trial. Imagine him going to jail for something stupid like this!!!

Russel, I totally love your spirit, just keep from getting yourself in trouble, it will hurt you and your wife and adorable son...

He was 1 of 6 to get a producing credit, but he didn't direct it. That bomb was co-written and directed by John Lee Hancock. He also directed "The Rookie" in 2002.

I will always like Crowe because of his reply to James Lipton on TV's "Inside the Actor's Studio" Q & A.

Lipton asked him the show's standard question, "If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?"

To which Crowe answered...

"Heaven does exist and uhhh, He'll probably say, 'G'day'."

Not terribly eloquent, but I've never heard any guest on that show correct Lipton regarding the factual existence of God's heaven.

I just replied to you on the other thread to say that Crowe was a dickhead in real life but a brilliant actor. He seems to have confirmed the first part of that critique.

I'd love to see a few of these fake movie tough guys get their ass kicked when they attack some citizen. Crowe, Alec Baldwin, etc. I remember reading that 30's movie star Franchot Tone was a mean drunk who thought he was tough. He threw a lot of movie shooting schedules off by getting beaten too badly to be photographed. One of his last appearences was a "Twilight Zone" episode where one side of his face was so bunged up he had to be shot in profile throughout the show. Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck.
