PASADENA, Calif. The Mars rover (search) Opportunity resumed rolling freely across the Martian surface Saturday after scientists freed it from a sand dune where it had been mired for nearly five weeks, NASA (search) officials said.
Engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (search), which manages the mission, cheered when images beamed back to Earth showed the rover's wheels were free.
"We've got a working rover on Mars that cost $400 million to build and ... keep working," project manager Jim Erickson said. "I'd like to wear it out rather than lose it."

Maybe Uncle Owen is a fleshist...all droides look alike
This one's for you...
Thank's rawhide!
They did wipe 3PO's mind... but there are STILL enough holes i could drive a tank through it!
Oh well.
I liked it anyway.
[I'd like to know why the unmasked Anakin/Vader looks like a 65 year-old man in Jedi, when he'd only be in his early 40's.
Or why Chewie doesn't seem to object Han's constant attacks on the Jedi and their religion when he so closely worked with them in the past.]
1) Because of the aging effect of using the dark side of the force. Look at the emperor's face for example. Also, he was burned over his whole body including his face, and if you think about how much sunburns can age your skin and then multiply that effect by how much the lava burned him...
2)Maybe Chewie does object to Han's remarks and that's what he's always howling about. Unless you speak "Wookish" you'll never know. Or perhaps Chewie is like a Freeper who has a longtime liberal friend who has been taken in by the "hate Bush" rhetoric. You maintain the friendship and wait for the day that they finally realize they've been duped by irrational fearmongers and sheepishly come to their senses.
:^)
Now that he's over the dunes, does he have a little surfboard with him?
Owen never saw R2D2 long enough to remember him from any other astro droid...as for C3P0, he knew right away what kind of droid he was - but after 30 years or so and a different body he probably wouldn't know or care it was the same droid since there were a number of protocol droids with the identical shape of C3P0.
C3P0's memory is also said to be "erased" in Ep. III - a rather loose attempt to prevent a continuity error in him not remembering his home planet. But don't take movies too seriously - they aren't as fun if you do. :-)
It looks like aliens needed some tires.
Well, he didn't own R2, and really wasn't around him all that much to remember him distinctly from any other astro droids, which were numerous.
Don't know about the third trilogy - the story of the fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker is over.
The guy playing him was actually 78 at the time.
"in favor of becoming a crotchety old fart."
When you say it like that, you make it sound bad.
There are several directions a third trilogy could take. The best might be to do a "Dallas", with Luke waking up back on the farm and telling his uncle, "I had the strangest dream last night." The uncle would then tell him, "Your father is here for a visit." Darth Vader would then walk in.
I love that picture.
Fantastic!
Not bad, considering that the rover was only supposed to be operational for about three months....
JPL has earned some kudos for this mission....
If he's gonna do the third trilogy, he'd better hurry. Mark Hamil isn't getting any younger, and IIRC he signed to do them before he left the set of RotJ.
Thanks to OnStar.
USA mars rovers are better then the failed Europe's Mars Beagle 2.
