Aruba Detains 2 in Case of Missing Teen

SAN NICOLAS, Aruba - Authorities detained two men Sunday in connection with the disappearance of an Alabama teenager, who went missing nearly a week ago in Aruba while on a high school trip, the attorney general said. ADVERTISEMENT

Caren Janssen called the men "suspects" in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, 18, but declined to provide further details. The men were not among the three described earlier by police as "persons of interest."

Police officers and three FBI agents, who are playing a supportive role in the investigation, took the two men into custody at two different houses in the southeastern town of San Nicolas, according to an AP photographer at the scene.

Police knocked on the door of one house, put the suspect on the floor and handcuffed him. Officers later detained a second man. They both were led to an unmarked police car and taken away.

Neighbors described the men as security guards who worked at a hotel closed down for renovation near where the 18-year-old blonde was staying at the Holiday Inn. Police and FBI agents searched the hotel Saturday.

Aruba is not supposed to be like that though. It's a very low crime place, actually part of Holland. Or something like that, but who knows?

Not supposed to be, perhaps. But the reality? If nothing else, the CIA World Factbook includes the entry:

transit point for US- and Europe-bound narcotics with some accompanying money-laundering activity

And then there's this, from the U.S. State Department:

CRIME: Street crime is low, but there have been incidents of theft from hotel rooms. Armed robbery has been known to occur. Valuables left unattended on beaches, in cars and in hotel lobbies are easy targets for theft.

Car theft, including that of rental vehicles for joy riding and stripping, can occur. Vehicle leases or rentals may not be fully covered by local insurance when a vehicle is stolen or damaged. Be sure you are sufficiently insured when renting vehicles and jet skis. For more information see the section below entitled “Special Circumstances.”

Not the worst armpit, certainly....but I stand by my earlier assessment. It's a third world armpit. Why go there?

Aruba's had a fine reputation as a vacation spot. They've enjoyed a low crime rate for years, one reason the local cops are somewhat out of their element with this case. Heard that the FBI was crawling all over the island, and that was Friday.

a hotel closed down for renovation

Sadly, that would be a good place for dirty work.

You missed out on a clueless troll who whined about all the attention this white girl was receiving.

To: Godebert; jimmy carter is a good man
"As an South-African American male, the thing that really bothers me the most about this whole incident of Zimbabwe is the zilch response to the disappearance of hundreds of thousands of productive, law-abiding, young and old alike, wealthy and poor alike, blond and brunette alike, white and black alike persons from their homes, farms and businesses. I sincerely hope that they can somehow return but I can't help but wonder if this amount of ignorance by the media and overwhelming absence of alarm would have been lavished except for the fact that the initially dispossessed where white and the dispossessors and the regime allowing this happen is black."

Bob Brinker was *Righteous* regarding the bankrupting abuse of pensions in California on his show last evening.

But Bob is nutz about Carter.

Seems to think Carter's a good man and able partner with the dispossessed. He thought that the Bushes should have had Mr. Carter be the goto for tsumnami relief. Because of Habitat for Humanity.

Well BB, Habitiat is a thousand times more in PR than it is in reality -- on the ground it can be awful. And I suspect Carters involvement with it is 99.95% PR and naught else of substance.

If Carter wants to help -- let him go to Zimbabwe and mount a campaign to induce the real homesteaders of homesteaders of all nations -- the Dutch Boers -- to return an operate the farms, and the ex-pat English and Scottish to return to Africa to provide that most excellent of all trade and commerce bulwarks -- the common law of England and Scotland. In other words -- have Carter bring back the Whites to the Black Country.

Then -- and for that -- would anyone be able to place Carter on the pedestal Brinker put him on.

Yup, my error, just caught that on rereading the article. But common sense says her appearance...she's stunning, blonde, blue-eyed...made her a tempting target. Undeniable. There was a case a few years back here in MA....a lovely young woman, similar appearance to this missing teen, was driving home late at night and stopped at a convenience store. Two louts already in the store noticed her, and the clerk spotted them staring, whispering, and asked the young woman if she wanted him to walk her to her car...or call a friend or her family to come get her. He was worried the two men would accost her in the parking lot. She said no, she was fine, and left. The louts followed her home, and when she parked in front of her condo, raped and murdered her.

And there was that case not long ago, oddly named young woman in the Minnesota? Attacked and murdered in broad daylight by a sex fiend -- on parole, maybe? (Her kidnapping was caught on a mall parking lot security camera.)

As to why people persist in going to third-world armpits...I simply cannot understand it.

It's not a third world armpit. I have been to Aruba many times, it's not a problem. Have you ever even been on an airplane?

Me neither.

It's very unlikely that a country dependent on tourism is going to report an ACCURATE crime rate. Of course there is crime there 0 it's in the Caribbean! The Caribbean is a dangerous place.

Except for the "Street crime is low" portion of this statement, you could be describing Anytown, USA.

I second this and I have been there as well as the St Maarten (another island in the Dutch antilles) - gorgeous. The real problem is leaving ANY bar in the wee hours of the morning with an unknown male. Leaving with MORE than one man - second issue. For a pre-med student, she had a major lapse in judgement. I'm not blaming the victim, young smart women fall prey to charmers everyday. My heart breaks for her mother. Prayers everyone - that's what's needed here right now.

I would not get into a car with a stranger at 2 am in this country! LOL You're right. People make mistakes. It seems as if she may have paid with her life for the lapse in judgment but I'll continue praying.

I can guarantee you, I've been more places outside the U.S. than you and why I state what I do. South America, China, Hong Kong, Europe etc.. have taught me a few things. There is NO way in the world that I'd have acted like this girl. If she is alive she's most likely a prostitute, if not she is dead.

Okay so you've travelled and know from experience. You would not do what she did BUT aybe she wasn't sober. People do dumb things when they aren't sober.
