Ex-Man 2 (New Characters In Upcoming "X-Men" Flick Include Beast, Juggernaut, Kitty Pryde!)

Finding a director for X-Men 3 hasn't been a cakewalk for 20th Century Fox. According to both Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, Layer Cake director Matthew Vaughn has departed the project, just two months before it's scheduled to begin shooting. He follows Bryan Singer out the door; Singer directed the first two X-Men movies but left the franchise last year to direct Superman Returns for Warner Bros., currently shooting in Australia. No word on who might replace Vaughn, but Fox president Hutch Parker told the Reporter that the production will still shoot on schedule and meet an expected May 26, 2006, release date.

The London-based Vaughn, best known for producing Guy Ritchie's movies before going behind the camera for Layer Cake, cited personal reasons for his departure, telling Variety that the shoot would mean too much time away from home. He'd hoped to be able to commute to Vancouver and Los Angeles for the lengthy shoot but realized he'd have to move to North America for a year. ''Not wishing to uproot his family for an extended period, Vaughn opted to depart the production,'' Fox said in a statement. (Vaughn is married to Claudia Schiffer, and they have two children.) His departure marks the second time he's dropped out of what would have been his big-budget Hollywood debut; earlier this year, he bolted Warner's big-screen version of '60s spy show The Man from U.N.C.L.E. to take the X-Men 3 job.

Some good news for X-fans: Variety reports that all the stars of the first two films will return for the third, including reported holdouts Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart. Recently announced additions to the cast include Kelsey Grammer as the furry blue Beast and Vinnie Jones (who starred in the Vaughn-produced Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) as Juggernaut. Lost's Maggie Grace is in talks to play Kitty Pryde.

Jones is well suited for the part. Put a red helmet on his head and get him in front of the cameras.

The fact that you've got "Replica" written down the side of your gun. (withdraws his gun) And the fact that I've got "Desert Eagle point five O" written on the side of mine should precipitate your balls into shrinking, along with your presence. Now . . . fu** off."

Jones was hilarious in "Eurotrip". Greatest road rage scene ever put on film; soccer hooligans, double decker bus and a French hi-way...BRILLIANT! :-)

Beast was always my favorite X-man and I can NOT see Kelsey Grammer as him. I realize he's mostly going to be CGI, but come on!

If the Beast is being done as CGI, the Kelsey's voice, and the intellect that viewers associate with it, are probably what they are looking for.

Wasn't there a new clip with Hank McCoy in X2?

Kitty, atleast someone who could walk through walls, was in X1, and mention by reference in X2.

I've been pleasantly surprised that they've done a good job with the X-Men franchise.

Really hope they don't screw up the FF (Spidey? Eh. Hulk? Eh. Daredevil? UGH!) -- that was my absolute FAVORITE Marvel series.

She's certainly a babe. Can she act? I've never seen "Lost."

I hate to say it, but as soon as they mentioned Kitty Pride, I immediately thought of ... RATS! What's her name... The woman who plays Grace on Will & Grace. While she's too old for the role, she's something of a dead ringer for the artwork Kitty.

I wonder if they're going to give Peter/Colossus more to do than a cameo this time... If they're going to be having Juggernaut, they'd better.

I also want to see Wolverine and Kurt go out on the town and party!

"...mention by reference in X2."

Nope. She was in the movie. Don't you remember the girl that woke up and fell through the bed? That was her.

Kitty Pryde aka Shadowcat.
