Some see Red over Sox pitch for `Queer'
Boston Herald ^ | 6/4/2005 | Wedge

``What would Ted Williams think? Would he turn over in his freezer?'' Mary Clossey, a Newton mom of eight who has been a critic of gay-rights efforts, said of the Sox' decision to let three stars of the TV show ``Queer Eye for the Straight Guy'' throw out tomorrow's ceremonial first pitch. ``I'm tired of hearing about (homosexuality). Sunday is a family day at Fenway Park. Why would you want to do that on a Sunday?"

Bet those three Queer Eye Guys would have preferred to "catch" instead of "pitch."

Besides Curt Schilling, Red Sox players Johnny Damon, Mike Timlin (of Midland, Texas) and (I think) Keith Foulke, among others, also are big GW Bush supporters! :-)

How did the crowd react?

When the "Queer Eye" guys were introduced, there was "polite" applause, along with a few hearty BOOs - mostly from men.

On the flip side, Irish Tenor Anthony Kearns sang a beautiful rendition of "God Bless America" for the 7th Inning Stretch, and received a HUGE round of applause and cheers from everyone in the crowd. ;-)

One of them wore a pink Red Sox shirt. That was kind of funny, actually.

I've never seen "Queer Eye...", but I guess the show with the Red Sox players is on Tuesday, June 7 (10pm?). I have to see if we even get the Bravo channel... I've never watched it.

"Yep, PINK, like a lot of the female Red Sox fans wear... LOL"

My daughter has one and likes it. And I like it on her. Now, if my son wanted one....(don't worry, he doesn't)

I heard a piece of Carson's interview. He actually suggested (jokingly?) renaming the team the Pink Sox. I think I will, at least in reference to the management team. But out of respect for Schilling, Nixon and a few others, I will go back to Red Sox for most uses.

State Sen. Jarrett Barrios, an openly gay lawmaker who recently "married" his longtime partner,

The "m-word" needs to be in quotation marks.

Yeah, I'm with you regarding the lib owners/managers of the Red Sox. I love what they've done to Fenway in keeping its integrity and a few other things they've done, but that shameless campaigning for Kerry after the Sox won the World Series pretty much ruined the elation over the victory for my husband and me. Thank God for Curt Schilling and a few other conservative players on the team!

I really didn't care for this promotion of the "Queer Eye" thing yesterday, especially since it was used to kick off gay pride week in Boston. I haven't seen the show, and I imagine it's funny for adults, but my #1 thought was what are parents in the crowd telling their young children about these "Queer Eye" guys right now? It has no place in a family ballpark, especially for a Sunday day game. Geesh...

I heard a discussion on WEEI radio yesterday (and Saturday) after both games about the "Queer Eye" guys. I don't know who the radio guys were (Larry and somebody else), as I don't live in the WEEI radio area. One was a definite liberal, the other a conservative, or at least somewhat conservative. Anyone who called in opposing the Queer Eye guys being at Fenway, Gay Pride week in Boston or expressing comments against gay marriage was immediately branded a "hate-filled homophobe" by the liberal guy! >:-(

We met Johnny Damon yesterday also, well sort of. He was near the buses the team was boarding for the airport (to travel to St. Louis for tonight's game) signing autographs. He was very nice... stayed out there for quite awhile. I couldn't get over the girls and middle-aged women screaming and sputtering over him! I just took a few pics... didn't have any desire to elbow my way through that raucous group!

Last year after the Red Sox victory parade, we happened to pass Bronson Arroyo sitting in his Hummer near Fenway signing autographs for kids and teens. We didn't stick around but were shopping at the souvenir shops in the area, within view of his car. He must've sat there for an hour signing autographs!

I admit I don't know much about baseball, but why does it take three guys to make the first pitch? Isn't that usually covered by just one guy?

Thanks for the compliments, but it isn't my site. I am simply an occasional contributor (and bad on me I haven't been as active lately).

Threesomes are big in some crowds that swing both ways.
